13. LEAD BATTERIES (PB)

a) General Information
Lead acid batteries are completely different to NiMH or NiCd batteries. Despite their high
capacity they can only provide low currents. The charging process is also different.
The charge current for lead acid batteries may only be a maximum of one-tenth (1/10 C)
the battery's capacity.
A maximum charge current of 0.5 A (500 mA) may be set for a 5000 mAh (5 Ah) lead acid
battery.
It is not permitted to rapidly charge lead acid batteries, as this would overload
the battery! Danger of fire and explosion!
Always heed the information printed on the battery or the details provided by
the battery manufacturer on the permitted charge current.
b) Charging Batteries ("CHARGE")
• In the main menu, select the "Pb" charge program with the button "TYPE/STOP".

• Press the button "ENTER/START"; the display shows, e.g., the following:

The value on the left in the second line shows the charge current, the value on the right
shows the voltage or number of cells of the battery (in this example, a 6-cell lead battery,
6 x 2.0 V = 12.0 V).
• If the values need to be changed, press the "ENTER/START" button. The charge current
begins to flash. Change the charge current using the keys "+" and "-", confirm the value
using the "ENTER/START" key.
• The voltage/cell number then begins to flash. Change this using the buttons "+" and "-".
You should be aware while doing this that the voltage only changes with the number of
cells (e.g. one cell = 2.0 V, two cells 4.0 V etc.) Confirm the setting by pressing the
"ENTER/START" button.
