13. LEAD-ACID BATTERIES (PB)

a) General
Lead-acid batteries are totally different from lithium, NiMH or NiCd batteries. They deliver only small currents when
compared to their high capacity, and the charging process also differs.
The charging current for modern lead-acid batteries must not exceed 0.4C; 1/10C is the optimum setting for all
lead-acid batteries.
A higher charging current is not permitted because it will overload the battery! The risks include not only
explosion and fire, but also the risk of injury from the acid it contains.
It is imperative to observe the information printed on the battery and data provided by the battery manu-
facturer as to what charging current is permitted.
The charger must be in the main menu.
With the "INC" or "DEC" buttons, select the battery type "Pb BATT".
Confirm your selection by pressing the "ENTER/START" button.
With the "INC" and "DEC" buttons, you can then select the different battery
programs:
• "CHARGE": Charging the battery
• "DISCHARGE": Discharging the battery
b) Charging the battery ("CHARGE")
The charging current to be set depends on the battery's capacity and should usually be 0.1C (see also Chapter
7). High-quality lead-acid batteries also tolerate a charging current of up to 0.4 C. However, it is imperative to pay
attention to the battery manufacturer's specifications.
The indication "0.1C" means that the charging current of 1/10 corresponds to the battery's capacity. For a
lead-acid battery with a capacity of 5000 mAh (= 5 Ah), this means that at 0.1C, the charging current is to be
set to 0.5 A.
Proceed as follows when charging a lead-acid battery:
• As already described in Chapter 13. a), first select the battery type "Pb BATT" from the main menu with the
buttons "INC" or "DEC" and press "ENTER/START".
• Use the "INC" or "DEC" buttons to select the battery program "CHARGE".
The set battery type is shown top left on the display and the battery
program next to it on the right.
The value at bottom left indicates the present set charging current; the value at bottom right is the voltage/cell
count of the lead-acid battery (our example shows a 6 cell lead-acid battery (6 x 2.0 V = 12.0 V).
Use the "INC" or "DEC" buttons to select a different battery program; return to the main menu with the button
"BATT/PROG/STOP".
