5. Commissioning the measuring system
Commissioning of the sensor is coupled with the commissioning of the whole measuring system.
After commissioning, the measuring system should give out a standard signal appropriate for the pH
value which is further processed in a control device or a controller.
Before switching the measuring system to a central control unit, check the careful implementation of
all preparatory measures compiled in the following checklist.
Checklist
•
Is the process a sterile application or not?
•
Has the electrolyte vessel been properly disinfected in the case of a sterile application?
•
Has the sensor been conditioned sufficiently?
•
Has the measuring system been calibrated according to current regulations?
•
Is the sensor system mounted according to current regulations?
•
Is the sensor installed in the equipment with adaptation set and connection fitting according to
current regulations?
•
Is a full bottle of the stipulated electrolyte present in the electrolyte vessel?
•
Which pressure do you require during operation in the electrolyte vessel (0.5 bar above proc-
ess or steam pressure)?
•
Is the required compressed air present upstream of the pressure regulator/controller?
•
Have all fluidic connections been made cleanly and do they seal effectively?
•
Is the measuring transformer supplied with the correct mains voltage and switched on?
•
Have all other electrical connections incl. the earth attachments been carried out properly?
If you can answer all questions in the checklist with yes or the correct variables, the measuring
system can be put into operation.
To commission, perform the following steps:
♦
On the pressure regulator/controller, set the required pressure for the electrolyte container. This
ensures that the electrolyte flows through the diaphragm and the diaphragm does not become
contaminated by the pressurised medium.
♦ Close all openings in the process container and pressurise the medium cavity with the required
process pressure. Avoid the condition where the pressure in the medium cavity is above the pres-
sure in the electrolyte container. In this event the diaphragm may become contaminated with me-
dium, electrolyte flow ceases and the functional sensitivity of the reference electrode is damaged.
♦ Check standard measuring signal 0 to 20 mA or 4 to 20 mA at the measuring transmitter output
using a suitable measuring device.
♦ If the measuring signal is present, connect the signal outputs of the measuring transmitter with the
signal inputs of the central control unit (or controller).
♦ The measuring system has been successfully commissioned
