MAINTENANCE
AIR FILTER
ATTENTION: Operating the machine without a functional air filter may cause severe engine damage and will
void the warranty. The air filter serves to prevent dirt or other particles from entering the engine that could
cause internal damage to it.
Cleaning the air filter
To clean the air filter:
For foam filters, clean the filter in warm water and a mild detergent, then rinse and let let it dry.
For paper filters, use compressed air to blow any particles off of it. The air should be blown from the
engine side of the filter.
Clean the other components of the air filter assembly using water and a mild detergent, and then
dry them.
For foam filters, put a few drops of motor oil on the filter and then wring it a few times to spread
the oil into the filter material, removing any excess oil.
Air Filter Removal and Installation
To remove the air filter:
1.
Unscrew (turn counterclockwise) the wing nut, being careful with the air filter cover, and remove
the cover from the air inlet assembly.
2.
Unscrew (turn counterclockwise) the wing nut and remove the filter element.
To install the air filter:
1.
Replace the filter element and make sure it is seated correctly in the air inlet assembly.
2.
Replace (turn clockwise) the wing nut and hand-tighten so that the filter element is securely in
place. Don't let it go too far.
3.
Replace the filter cover and secure it with the wing nut (turn clockwise). Tighten the nut by hand,
without allowing it to become unthreaded.
SPARK PLUG
Cleaning the spark plug
The spark plug should be cleaned and inspected according to the maintenance schedule.
1.
Remove any carbon deposits from the spark plug and electrodes with a wire brush.
2.
Clean the threads of the spark plug and the upper electrical terminal.
To inspect and adjust the spark plug groove:
1.
Using a feeler gauge, measure the spark plug gap. The gauge should slide with little resistance between the
2.
electrodes, which means the measurement is fairly accurate.
3.
Adjust the distance according to specifications. If the distance needs to be reduced, tap the electrode as
4.
necessary. If the distance needs to be increased, use pliers to gently pull the electrode as necessary.
5.
Remeasure the distance and make sure it is within the specified range before replacing the spark plug.
Spark Plug Removal and Installation
To remove the spark plug:
1.
Pull the electrical wire from the terminal above the spark plug.
2.
Clean the area around the spark plug so that dirt or other material does not enter the engine when the
spark plug is removed.
3.
Use the spark plug tool to remove the spark plug (turn counterclockwise).
To install the spark plug:
1.
Place the spark plug in its hole and screw it in (turn clockwise) until it is tight enough.
2.
Use the spark plug tool to tighten it approximately a quarter turn (without overthreading).
3.
Place the electrical wire on top of the spark plug terminal and push it down so that it connects firmly with
the terminal.
