10.2.1 Replacing the mechanical seal
Replacement
94
During the running-in period, a minor amount of dripping is to be
expected. A visual inspection should be performed from time to time,
however. If there is clearly detectable leakage, the seal must be
changed.
Dismantling:
• Disconnect the system from the power supply and secure it against
being switched on again.
• Make sure it is not live.
• Earth and short-circuit the working area.
• Close the check valves in front of and behind the pump.
• Disconnect the power cable.
• De-pressurise the pump by opening the bleed valve (Fig. 5,
Item 1.31).
DANGER! Risk of scalding!
Due to high fluid temperatures there is a risk of scalding.
• At high fluid temperatures, let the pump cool down before starting
any work.
• Release the pressure measuring lines of the differential pressure sen-
sor.
• Dismantle the coupling protection (Fig. 5, Item 1.32).
• Loosen the coupling screws (Fig. 5, Item 1.41) on the coupling unit.
• Loosen the motor fastening screws (Fig. 5, Item 5) on the motor
flange and lift the drive off the pump with suitable hoisting gear. On
certain SIE pumps, the adapter ring comes loose (Fig. 5, Item 8).
• By loosening the lantern fastening screws (Fig. 5, Item 4), dismantle
the lantern unit with coupling, shaft, mechanical seal and impeller
from the pump housing.
NOTE:
For PBE pumps with ≤ 4 kW, loosening the lantern fastening screws
also removes the pump supporting foot.
• Loosen the impeller fastening nut (Fig. 5, Item 1.11), remove the
washer (Fig. 5, Item 1.12) beneath it and pull the impeller (Fig. 5,
Item 1.13) from the pump shaft.
CAUTION! Risk of property damage!
Risk of damaging shaft, coupling and impeller!
• If dismantling is difficult or if the impeller jams, do not hit the
impeller or shaft at the side (e.g. with a hammer), but instead, use
a suitable extraction tool.
• Pull the mechanical seal (Fig. 5, Item 1.21) off the shaft.
• Pull the coupling (Fig. 5, Item 1.4) with the pump shaft out of the lan-
tern.
• Thoroughly clean the sliding/seat surfaces of the shaft. If the shaft is
damaged, it must be replaced.
• Remove the counter ring of the mechanical seal with the sealing collar
from the lantern flange, as well as the O-ring (Fig. 5, Item 1.14) and
clean the seal seats.
• Clean the seating surfaces of the shaft carefully.
Installation:
• Press a new mechanical seal counter ring with sealing collar into the
seal seat of the lantern flange. A commercially available dishwashing
liquid can be used as a lubricant.
• Install a new O-ring in the O-ring seat groove on the lantern.
• Check the coupling sliding surfaces. If necessary, clean and lightly oil
them.
