OPERATION & SERVICE MANUAL FOR MOWER DECK
8-3. Inspection and replacement of the
blades
1) Inspection of the blades
Caution:
Be sure to wear gloves when inspecting or
replacing the blades to avoid cutting your hands.
a. Raise the mower to its highest level. Inspect the
blades for wear and deformation.
b. Worn or deformed blades should be replaced
with new ones.
Fig.8-11
Note:
Rounded blade edges create excessive clearance
around the overlapping part of the blades, which
may leave un-cut grass behind. Keep attention to
blade wear and replace worn ones early.
Important:
• Too low cutting heights or mowing just after
sprinkling earth will accelerate blade wearing.
• Blade edges are tempered. Therefore if rounded
edge is re-sharpened, tempering deteriorates
and wearing results, which leads to increased
overlapping blade clearance thus much uncut
grass is left behind.
• For efficient cutting, blades should be replaced
with new ones early.
c. Check the blades for balance and ground clear-
ance of the blades.
Important:
Unbalanced blades will cause excessive vibra-
tion. Blades should be checked on a blade bal-
ancer before installation.
d. Disengage the PTO clutch and make certain that
the blades rotate smoothly. (Be sure to stop the
engine ahead of time.)
e. Set all the gauge wheels at the same height
{around 85 mm (3.4 inch) is recommended} and
measure the clearance between each blade and
the ground.
Fig.8-12
Note:
If the mower is tilted, correct this by adjusting
the lift rod length at the front ends of both rods.
f.
Set the mower on a level concrete floor. Measure
the ground clearance at both ends of each blade
in the same position. If the measured values of
both ends of a blade are different from each
other by more than 2 mm (0.08 inch), it shows
that the blade is deformed. Replace with a new
one at once.
2) Replacement of the blades
Caution:
As the blades have very sharp edges, be sure to
wear gloves. Prepare wooden blocks as assisting
tools.
