ARNINGS
The mask should not be used
•
unless the CPAP or bilevel system
is turned on and operating
properly.
When the CPAP or bilevel system
•
is functioning properly, fresh air
flushes exhaled air out through the
exhaust vents of the mask.
Rebreathing exhaled air may be
harmful if continued for prolonged
periods. Never block the exhaust
vents.
The exhaust vent flow is lower at
•
lower mask pressures (see
Pressure/Flow Curve - Figure A). If
the mask pressure during
expiration is too low, there may
not be enough exhaust vent flow
to completely flush the air delivery
hose of exhaled air before the
start of the next inspiration. The

possibility of rebreathing should be
assessed in patients prescribed
expiratory pressures below
4 cmH
O. However, when the

system is not operating, exhaled air
may be rebreathed. Rebreathing of
exhaled air can in some
circumstances, lead to suffocation.
The mask should not be worn if
the anti-asphyxia valve membrane
is damaged or missing. If the valve
membrane is damaged, distorted
or torn, it should be replaced with
a new valve membrane.
The anti-asphyxia valve membrane
should be replaced at least every
six months.
The mask may not be suitable for
those at increased risk of gastric
regurgitation.
If supplemental oxygen is used,
inhaled oxygen concentration will
vary, depending on the pressure
settings, patient breathing pattern,
mask selection and the leak rate.
When using a humidifier with the
system, always place the humidifier
below the level of your body. If it is
placed at or above the level of
your body, heated water may flow
down the air tubing and into the
mask.
