Correct Use
WARNING!
This product is part of a fall protection system. National standards and state, provincial, and federal laws
require the user to be trained before using this product. Use this manual as part of a user safety training
program that is appropriate for the user's occupation. These instructions must be provided to users before
use of the product and retained for ready reference by the user. The user must read, understand (or have
explained), and obey all instructions, labels, markings, and warnings supplied with this product and with
other products intended for use in association with this product. If this personal protective equipment (PPE)
is resold, it is essential that the instructions for use, maintenance, and periodic examination are provided in
the language of destination.
Users must obey all applicable standards and regulations. OSHA regulations specify that
Horizontal Lifeline (HLL) systems shall be installed and used under the supervision of a Qualified Person*
as part of a complete personal fall arrest system that maintains a safety factor of at least two. Do NOT
exceed the allowable free fall distance or maximum fall arrest forces specified by governing standards or
subsystem components.
Use only compatible MSA components, connectors, and subsystems with this equipment. The use of
non-approved components, connectors, or subsystems can put the safety and reliability of the complete
system at risk. Do NOT change the design or configuration of the MSA stanchion or intentionally use it incor-
rectly.
Do NOT use fall protection equipment for purposes other than those for which it is designed. Do NOT use
fall protection equipment for towing, hoisting, or material handling. Do NOT use MSA fall protection equip-
ment while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If you have muscular, skeletal, or other physical condi-
tions that decrease your ability to withstand fall-arrest shock loads or prolonged suspension, consult a
physician before you use the HLL system. Children less than 18 years of age and pregnant women must
never use the HLL system.
The risk of swing falls increases when a self-retracting lanyard is used. Swing falls significantly increase the
clearance necessary to stop a fall. Prevent swing falls and impact with objects in or adjacent to the fall path.
Always remove obstructions below the work area to ensure a clear fall path. Keep work area free from
debris, obstructions, trip hazards, spills or other hazard which could impair the safe operation of the fall
US
protection system. DO NOT use the Anchorage connector unless a qualified person has inspected the work-
place and determined that identified hazards can neither be eliminated nor exposures to them prevented.
Work directly under the anchor/anchorage connector whenever possible. Free fall distance and the potential
for swing falls increase when not working directly under the anchorage/anchorage connector. Do NOT do
work beyond the end stanchions or too far to either side of the HLL system.
Do NOT use where lanyard, shock absorber or other system and subsystem components may be exposed
to sharp or abrasive edges or sheared, expanded metal, or frame cut steel. Sharp edges may damage
components during use or may cut a lanyard or shock absorber during a fall. Cover all sharp or abrasive
edges with padding or sheathing before working above edge.
When a user falls while connected to the HLL system, the wire rope will deflect within the span to which the
user is connected. If two users are connected to the system within the same span and one user falls, the
second user can be pulled off the work surface because of the deflection of the HLL. The possibility that the
second user will fall increases as the HLL span length increases.
