Inspection

WARNING!
Examine all components of connecting subsystems used with the HLL system according to the manufac-
turers' instructions.
Do inspections more frequently in corrosive or extreme weather environments.
Failure to obey these warnings can result in serious injury or death.
The horizontal lifeline system must be inspected by the user before each use.
A Qualified Person other than the user must do the following inspection of the HLL system after initial instal-
lation.
A Qualified Person other than the user must also do the following as part of a formal inspection of the HLL
system at least annually. Do formal inspections more frequently in environments where dangerous work
conditions make it necessary.
Record the results of inspections in an Inspection and Maintenance Log.
(1)
Tighten the nuts and clamp nut on the steel stanchion; and post nuts, saddle clamp bolts, shackle nuts
and cotter pins, and tieback chain on concrete stanchion before each use.
(2)
Examine the turnbuckle for damage. Make sure that sufficient threads are engaged in the turnbuckle
body. Look for cracks and deformities in the metal.
(3)
Examine the metal components for rust or corrosion that can have an effect on their strength or oper-
ation.
(4)
Examine HLLs with wire rope for rust, corrosion, broken wires, or other damage.
(5)
Make sure that the sag of the HLL at mid-span is as specified by its HLL installation instructions.
(6)
Make sure that all hardware (fasteners, carabiners, cable clips) that connects the HLL assembly is in
position and installed correctly.
(7)
Examine the energy absorber for extension or deformation. Do inspections more frequently in corro-
sive or extreme weather environments. Remove extended energy absorbers from service immediately
and discard them.
(8)
Examine the mounting hardware for the energy absorber. Make sure that the hardware is installed and
operates correctly.
(9)
Make sure that you can see and read all system labels. Replace labels that cannot be read or are
missing.
(10) Refer to the HLL installation manual for additional inspections.
