General
It is important that you read these operating instructions
carefully before using the Endomed 581
sure that these instructions are available to all person-
nel who operate the equipment. The equipment is only
meant to be used by competent personnel in physi-
otherapy, rehabilitation or adjacent areas.
For the various applications of this apparatus, please
refer to our therapy book "Low and Medium Frequency
Electrotherapy", reference number 1480.762. Pay atten-
tion to the following before using the Endomed 581
1. Keep yourself informed of the contra-indications (see
page 22).
2. The apparatus may not be used in close proximity
(i.e. less than 2 metres) to shortwave or microwave
equipment.
3. The patient must be in sight of the therapist at all
times.
The manufacturer cannot be held responsible for the
results of using this apparatus for any purposes other
than described in these operating instructions.
Installation
• Do not install the unit in a location near to a heat source
such as a radiator.
• Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, rain, excessive dust,
dampness, mechanical vibrations and shocks.
• This unit should not be used in so-called "wet rooms"
(hydrotherapy rooms).
• The unit has to be installed in such way that liquid can-
not enter.
Should any liquid ingress into the housing of this equip-
ment, unplug the unit from the wall socket and have it
checked by an authorized expert.
Connection
• Mains supply connections must comply with the na-
tional requirements regarding medical rooms.
• Before connection of this apparatus to the supply,
check that the mains voltage and frequency stated on
the typeplate of this apparatus correspond to that of
the mains supply. The 220-240 V model is meant for
countries with mains voltage of 220, 230 or 240 volt.
The 115 V model is meant for countries with mains
voltage of 110, 120 or 130 volt.
• This apparatus may only be connected to an earthed
wall socket.
• Only use the mains cable supplied with the appara-
tus.
• We advise you not to use wireless telephones in the
proximity of the equipment.
• A potential equalisation cable may be connected to
this unit, if required by national regulations.
Technical maintenance
We recommend to have the unit checked annually. This
may be done by your supplier, or by another agency,
authorized by the manufacturer. It is also recommended
that a record of the service history is kept for all activities
relating to service and maintenance. In some countries
this is even obligatory. The check up and/or technical
maintenance must be carried out conform the proce-
dure described in the service manual of the unit.
No attempt should be made to open the unit. Maintenance

Dynamic application techniques
The Endomed 581
characteristic. This can cause unpleasant connection and
disconnection reactions in dynamic application techniques

if the electrodes are not securely placed or lose contact
with the skin. Make sure the output is set to 0 mA when you
apply or remove the electrodes. Preferably use Constant
Voltage (CV) in case of dynamic application techniques.
Electrolytic effects
Electrolysis occurs under the electrodes when current
types with a D.C. component are applied. Because the
greatest concentration of electrolytic by-products is
caused by ion migration occurring under the electrodes,
we recommend the use of the supplied sponges to keep
the effects to a minimum. Make sure that the sponges
are kept well moistened and place the thick side of the
sponge between the flexible rubber electrodes and the
patient.
Electromagnetic interference
Simultaneous connection of a patient to High Frequency
Therapy (shortwave or microwave) equipment and an
electrical stimulator must not be done as this may result
in burns at the site of the stimulator electrodes. Opera-
tion in close proximity (i.e. less than 2 metres) to work-
ing shortwave or microwave therapy units may produce
instability in the Endomed 581
To prevent electromagnetic interference, we strongly
advise using separate mains groups (phases) for the
Endomed 581
ment, and a distance of at least 2 metres is kept be-
tween the Endomed 581
wave equipment. Ensure that the mains cable of the
shortwave/microwave unit does not come near the
Endomed 581
magnetic interference persist, please contact your au-
thorized distributor.
Product Liability
A law on Product Liability has become effective in many
countries. This Product Liability law implies, amongst
other things, that once a period of 10 years after a prod-
uct has been brought into circulation has elapsed, the
manufacturer can no longer be held responsible for pos-
sible defects of the product.
Accessories and equipment combinations
The Endomed 581
tion with the Vacotron 360/560 suction massage appli-
ance and the ultrasound unit Sonopuls 590. The combi-
nation of Endomed 581
tically expedient because the application of the elec-
trodes is greatly simplified and the skin resistance is
diminished.
With combination of ultrasound- electrotherapy two therapy
forms are combined to a therapy in which both forms
have a positive influence to one another. The equip-
ment must be connected to one another as described
hereafter.
