INTENDED USE
The 3M™ SD-200 Sound Level Meter is intended to measure sound pressure levels in air and provide

sound and noise detection measurements. It is fitted with a keypad with five easy-to-use keys for
powering on/off, viewing and/or running measurements, navigating and setting parameters. (See Table
2 for more information). For suitability and proper use follow local regulations, refer to all information
supplied or contact a safety professional or 3M on 0870 60 800 60 (UK) or 1800 320 500 (Ireland).
NOTE: For typical sound measurements when determining hearing protection, the SD-200
may be set to A frequency weighting with slow time response.
PREPARATION FOR USE
Charging
It is recommended that the SD-200 is charged for approximately 12 hours before first use.
When the battery indicator appears, it signifies that the instrument needs to be charged
The 3M™ SD-200 can be charged with a mini-USB cable plugged into a computer USB port. The
mini-USB port is located at the bottom of the instrument.
A fully discharged battery will take 2.5 to 12.0 hours to charge based on available power.

Calibrating

I
t is advisable to perform a field calibration before taking measurements to ensure your
measurements are accurate in the current environment. An optional calibrator and calibrator adaptor
are used for this procedure.
1. When the instrument is off, press and hold the run/stop key and then press the power key. Release
the keys and "CAL" will appear on the screen.
2. Place the calibrator adaptor and the calibrator over the microphone and turn on the calibrator.
3. To adjust the level to match the calibrator, press either the Fast/Slow key to increase or the
run/stop key to decrease.
4. To accept the level, press the mode key or press the A/C key to cancel.

Windscreen
The 3M™ SD-200 features a removable windscreen. This is primarily designed to reduce noise

effects from wind with minimal effect on the readings. It is recommended to use the instrument with
the windscreen on at all times in order to protect the microphone. When the instrument is shipped the

windscreen will be detached. To attach, slide the windscreen completely over the microphone.
Positioning
If hand-held, position the SD-200 microphone at 0 degrees for the reference direction (or at 70
degrees for random incidence) angled towards the noise source.

To place the instrument in a work zone/area, a tripod may be used by connecting it to the tripod
mount whilst positioning it at about a 70 degree angle towards the noise source.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Switching on
Press the power key until the LCD turns on (Warm up time is about 5 seconds).
When switched on, a self test screen flashes with country code and revision level (e.g. E1.0) and

exchange rate (e.g. 3 LEQ/5 LAVG). Then a measurement screen appears.
Viewing Sound Pressure Levels (SPL)
The measurement screen will display the current Sound Pressure Level (SPL) in dB or the last
screen viewed prior to switching off.
NOTE: No measurement screen indicator appears for SPL (See figure 1)
Switching off
Press and hold the power key until OFF disappears. Releasing within 2 seconds will keep the
instrument switched on. Once switched off, the SD-200 will save the instruments settings and
measurements, which are displayed again when switched back on.
NOTE: Whilst in run mode, the instrument will not switch off until the stop button is pressed.
Running a Sound Level Study
Integrating Measurements
Integrating measurements compute the average value over a period of time. In many work
environments, noise levels may be highly variable making it difficult to assess the sound level. With
the averaging function, you will see steadier values over the Run-Time (RT).
Figure 2 depicts the SPL and LEQ values measured over the RT. When the measurements are
compared, the SPL values measure the maximum and minimum values while the LEQ provides
steadier readings over the length of the study.

General
• The battery in this instrument has limited shelf-life, even if never used.
• A non-condensing environment is required for proper instruments
• Do not charge the battery outside of the range of 0°C to 40°C.
• Battery run-time may be reduced when operating at temperatures lower than 0°C.
• The 3M™ SD-200 Sound Level Meter may not be sufficient to carry out a full risk assessment of
workers exposed to hazardous noise levels to help comply with the European Physical Agents
(Noise) Directive 2003/10/EC. For further information contact a Safety Professional or Industrial
Hygienist.
