5.2 Further limits of use
Chain slings must not be used outside of the listed tempe-
rature ranges. After use outside the specified temperature
ranges, the chain slings must be decommissioned imme-
diately.
PFEIFER chain slings and accessories are designed for
20,000 load changes. Nevertheless, for high dynamic
loads there is the risk that chains or components will be
damaged.
When used as lifting magnet chain slings (electromagnets):
increase by at least one nominal chain thickness – consult
PFEIFER.
If not all single legs of a chain sling are being used at
one time, the specified working load limit on the WLL
identification tag will not be applicable. The permissible
load should be taken from the working load limit table
depending on the chain dimensions, the number of legs
used and the quality grade. Under no circumstances
may a chain sling be loaded beyond the marked working
load limit. Single legs that are not being used should be
hooked back to the suspension link, to prevent danger
caused by free swinging or unintentional hooking.
Particularly hazardous conditions: The specifications in
this operating manual presume the absence of
particularly hazardous conditions. Particularly hazardous
conditions include uses off-shore, lifting of persons and
the lifting of potentially hazardous loads such as liquid
metals, or nuclear material. For such cases consult with
PFEIFER to determine the degree of danger and
admissibility.
6. Inappropriate use
DANGER: Improper handling of chain slings
poses a threat to life for persons and a risk
of damage to equipment. In particularly the
person standing below or next to the load is
endangered. Beware of swinging loads.
CAUTION: Only assemble chains and
components of different qualities or chains
and components of different manufacturers
upon consultation with the concerned
manufacturer. Installation may only be
performed by qualified persons.

Hooks may not be loaded at and on the tip: Suspension
links must be freely movable in the crane hook. The
load may only be lifted when in the hook base and in
load direction. Use hooks only with functional safety
latch, unless otherwise approved. Chain components
may not be subjected to bending.

Changes to the chain sling deviating from the delivery
condition are not permissible.
PFEIFER chain slings are not intended for use with
foodstuffs and cosmetic or pharmaceutical products
and should not be exposed to severely corrosive condi-
tions (e. g. acids, caustic solutions, chemicals, waste
water...). Also, do not expose them to the vapours of
acids and chemicals. Moreover, PFEIFER chain slings
must not be used in pickling plants, galvanizing plants
and similar companies (corrosion promoting), because
of invisible pitting corrosion in the joints, embrittlement
or crack formation.
PFEIFER chain slings are not intended for passenger
transport or for use in explosion-protected areas. They
also may not be used for lifting liquid metal. Chain legs
may not be twisted or knotted.
All types of surface treatments such as paint stripping
with solvents or caustics or the subsequent application
of surface coatings are dangerous processes. Consult
with PFEIFER about suitability and approval.
PFEIFER chain slings may not be used without the WLL
identification tag.
7. Commissioning
Determining the load weight and centre of gravity:
The working load limit (WLL) of the chain sling must
not be exceeded. Hook unused chain legs to the point
of suspension.
