10. Cutting

a) General rules
The saw chain must be running at full speed before it makes contact with the workpiece (Ú Kickback).
Before an operation, it is strongly recommended to familiarize yourself with the product and its working
behaviour. Get some practice in a safe area on a workpiece.
Observe the wood shavings. If they become dusty the saw chain could need sharpening (Ú Saw chain
sharpening).
To avoid damage to the engine (10), do not start the product if the saw chain is lodged in the wood.
To avoid jamming, always remove the saw chain from the workpiece when the saw chain is still running.
Observe the remaining cutting way. After cutting a workpiece through, the resistance disappears rapidly. An
unexpected movement of the product could be the result if the operator continues pushing with the same
force.
The product can be only used on trees, limbs and branches with a diameter smaller than the length of the
guide bar (35 cm).
Always check if the workpiece is under any kind of pressure or tension, as these forces can suddenly get
free while cutting.
To avoid accidents and injuries, consult an expert if in any doubt.
b) Kickback
Warning! Kickback is the sudden and uncontrolled backward/upward motion of the chain saw that could
cause a serious personal injury. Do not rely exclusively upon the safety devices built into your saw. As a
chain saw operator, you should take several steps to keep your cutting jobs free from accidents or injury.
Causes of kickback:
• Kickback may occur when the nose or tip of the guide bar touches an object, or when the wood closes in and
pinches the saw chain in the cut.
• Tip contact in some cases may cause a sudden reverse reaction, kicking the guide bar up and back towards the
operator.
• Pinching the saw chain along the top of the guide bar may push the guide bar rapidly back towards the operator.
• Either of these reactions may cause you to lose control of the saw which could result in serious personal injury. Do
not rely exclusively upon the safety devices built into your saw. As a chain saw user, you should take several steps
to keep your cutting jobs free from accident or injury.
