Flying in headless mode

As described in Chapter 10, at the beginning of flight training, it is very important that the pilot stand behind the
quadrocopter and that the quadrocopter be aligned with the two red propellers facing forward. Only then do the flight
movements of the quadrocopter occur from the pilot's perspective exactly as they are controlled on the transmitter.
Regardless of which direction the pilot steers, he or she sees the quadrocopter fly in exactly this direction.
However, if the quadrocopter turns in the air and faces with the two red propellers toward the pilot, the quadrocopter
moves from the pilot's perspective exactly opposite of the way it is steered on the transmitter. Because steering
errors can very easily occur in such situations, the headless mode was developed. In this flight mode, „front" for the
quadrocopter is no longer the side with the red propellers, but rather the cardinal direction in which it was facing when
it was switched on.
To fly in headless mode, please proceed as follows:
First, calibrate the compass if you have not already done so at the place where you are using the quadrocopter.
Then set the quadrocopter on the ground and align it in the desired direction (e.g. looking toward a church tower).
Start up the transmitter, then the quadrocopter. In the process, the quadrocopter must not be turned or moved again,
Stand exactly behind the quadrocopter, a few meters away, so that you are looking in the same direction as you have
aligned the quadrocopter. Start the motors and let the model take off.
Check the correct flight behaviour and set the desired steering sensitivity (40, 60, 80 or 100%).
Press and hold the switch button for the photo function
(see Fig. 1, Pos. 9) until the transmitter emits continu-
al beeps. The quadrocopter is now flying in headless
mode.
You can now turn the quadrocopter 180° so that it faces
with the two red propellers toward you.
If you steer to the right, the quadrocopter will fly to the
right from your perspective. In „normal mode", the model
would fly to the left from your perspective in this situ-
ation.
If you steer forward, the quadrocopter will not fly toward
you, but in the direction of the church tower.
To switch off headless mode again, press and hold the
switch button for the photo function again until the trans-
mitter beeps three times in quick succession.
If the quadrocopter does not hold cleanly to the starting alignment, the compass in the model needs to be
recalibrated.
Attention, important!
For you to be able to use headless mode correctly, it is necessary for you to always stand behind the quad-
rocopter and look in the direction in which you aligned the quadrocopter before the start.
