an adjustment is needed,
7.
Pull the cutterhead guard (D) aside and release. The guard will return to its
original position against the fence, completely covering the jointer
cutterhead.
a.
Do not use the jointer if the guard does not fully return to the
position, Power it off and remove the safety key. Do not allow anyone
to use it until the guard is repaired and fully operational.
8.
Determine which facing is concave. Place that side against the table and
fence when cutting. The ends will touch the fence and stabilize the wood
during the cut.
a.
If the convex side is placed against the fence, the board may pivot
during a cut and cause the material to kickback.
b.
A twisted piece of lumber will rock from corner-to-corner. You can
attempt to hold the lumber so neither of the other corners touch the
infeed table during the cut or you can use a hand plane to remove
enough material from the corners so it will stop rocking.
9.
Next determine the wood grain direction. When feeding cross-grain
lumber into the cutterhead, the narrow end of the 'V' shape should point
away from the cutterhead. Straight grain may be cut from either end.
10. If the workpiece is too wide for the Jointer, you can rip cut it into separate
pieces and glue them back together after each piece has the face
flattened.
PLANING A WORKPIECE
1.
Begin by creating a flat reference face on the workpiece.
2.
Set the fence angle to 0º.
3.
Set the infeed table depth to 1/16 in.
4.
Insert the safety key into the power switch and turn on the jointer. Allow
the knife to attain full speed.
5.
Place the concave side down on the table and use the push sticks or
blocks to push it snug against the fence.
6.
Move the lumber forward at a slow, even pace. Brace for contact with the
cutterhead. Do not stop while cutting, as it will create a 'step' in the wood
when too much is removed.
7.
The cutterhead guard will move aside when the lumber contacts it.
Continue moving the lumber forward until the entire workpiece has
