3.
Slide a flat washer over a 1/4 in. diameter wood screw that is long enough
to penetrate the benchtop at least a 1/2 in. Insert the screw through a
corner hole in the base and secure the base to the bench top.
4.
Repeat with three more screws. Tighten all screws until the gap between
the jointer' s base and the bench top is 1/8 in.
OPERATION
WARNING! Check if anyone is standing along the path of the jointer's infeed
table before starting the task. Should a kickback occur, the workpiece can
travel a significant distance and strike with considerable force. It may cause a
severe injury. Ask the bystanders to move away.
The jointer' s purpose is to create flat surfaces. Once one face and an edge are
flat, you would trim the excess wood from the other edge using a table saw,
then run the wood through a planer to smooth the last face.
Attempting to flatten both faces and the edge on the jointer will magnify any
discrepancy in the fence and table angle and make it difficult to obtain 90º
edges.
Even though the upright table is at a 90º angle, it registers as 0º on the angle
gauge. Remember to take this into account when calculating angles.
The cutterhead knife edges are easily dulled or chipped. Use quality lumber
that is not contaminated with dirt or grime, has no foreign objects like nails or
staples and as few knots as possible.
Significantly warped lumber may not be suitable for the jointer. It is possible
that reducing the board length can reduce the amount of warp that must be
removed to create a level facing.
Do not perform jointing/planing operations when the workpiece is shorter than
3 x 12 in. (76 x 200 mm) or less than 1/2 in. (12 mm) thick. You can plane thinner
pieces of wood, but it is more likely to splinter.
PUSH STICKS AND BLOCKS
A push stick or push block is used to control and guide a workpiece on the
benchtop jointer while keeping your hands at least 6 inches away from the
moving bit/blade. Also use a push stick or push block when the workpiece is
shorter than 12 inches.
A push stick is a slender tool with a notch that fits over a workpiece's end or
side edge to push it into the fence and/or push it into the tool's bit or blade.
