Protection against UV radiation and burns
A notice stating 'Caution: do not look at the arc!' should be placed near the work
area.
• The workplace should always be secured in such a way that bystanders are protected.
• Only allow authorised and competant people to use the welder.
• Do not work in confined spaces with light coloured, glossy walls.
• Windows below head height should be covered with a protective coating to pre-
vent UV radiation getting through or reflecting from the glass.
Dangers of flying sparks
Flying sparks can cause serious burns.
For this reason pay special attention to the following safety instructions:
- Always wear a leather welding apron
- Always wear well insulated welding gauntlets
- Always wear a protective head shield made of heat resistant material
- Keep your trouser legs over your shoes
- Wear sturdy insulated safety boots
Dangers of slag or molten metal
Slag is hard and brittle after solidification. Using the chipping hammer on the har-
dened slag can cause sharp pieces to break off and cause eye injuries.
Always cover your eyes or wear suitable protective goggles when using the chip-
ping hammer.
Risk of fire from flying sparks
Molten metal or slag falling onto inflammable material can cause a fire. Always re-
move any inflammable material from the work area before starting work. Always ha-
ve a fire extinguisher ready.
Always take special care around the following materials:
- Paper
- Rags
- Textiles
- Wood and wood fibres
- Rubber
- Plastic
- Petrol
- Oil
- Materials containing tar
- Paints and solvents.
