8. Commissioning the encoder

8.1 Connecting the connection wires

When connecting the connection wires, their correct functioning must be checked.
• Make sure that the supply voltage has been correctly applied. In the case of reverse polarity the
encoder will not function and no signals will be output.
• Check the communication of the SSI / BiSS interface. If the wiring is incorrect, no communication will
be possible. The data line must be terminated with a 120 ohm resistor.
• Check the correct application of the sine/cosine signals, the amplitude (signal height), polarity and
the phase position. If there is an error in the sine/cosine path, the function sin2 (x) + cos2 (x) = 1 will
not be fulfilled or the direction of rotation will be incorrect, for example due to the reversal of Sin and
Cos (incorrect phase position).

8.2 Operational readiness when switching on

After switching on the supply voltage, the sine/cosine signals are available immediately, however there
is a waiting time of approximately 150 ms before the encoder is ready for operation, i.e. before the
interfaces are ready to communicate. The encoder will communicate only after this time via the SSI or
BiSS interface.

8.3 Guidelines

Power-on delay
After switching on, the device requires a time of approximately 150 ms before valid data can be read.
SET button
The encoder can be set to zero at any position by means of a High signal on the SET input or by
pressing the SET button (can be operated only with a pen or a thin item). Other preset values can be
factory-programmed. The SET input has a signal delay time of approximately 1 ms. Once the SET
function has been triggered, the encoder requires an internal processing time of approximately 15 ms
before the new position data can be read. The LED is on during this time. If this input is not used, it
should be connected to 0 V (Encoder ground GND) in order to avoid interferences.
