2.5 Functional description

The purification process is controlled fully
automatically by the control unit. A purifica-
tion cycle lasts approx. 8 hours and is com-
pleted with the discharge of the purified
water. The purification process is based on
microorganisms which purify the sewage
during the treatment phase.
1. Introduction of the black water
(total domestic sewage)
The entire domestic sewage reaches the
preliminary sedimentation chamber. There
the heavy parts sink to the bottom and form
a layer of sludge. The sewage sludge re-
mains in the preliminary sedimentation
chamber, consolidates and has to be dis-
posed off on reaching the maximum intake
capacity.
2. Filling the aeration chamber (feeding)
The aeration chamber is filled with the se-
wage from the preliminary sedimentation
chamber. A defined sewage volume is led
via the feed syphon from the preliminary
sedimentation chamber into the aeration
chamber.
3. Sewage treatment phase
(normal, economy and holiday phase)
Inside the aeration chamber, the sewage is
vortexed with short aerator blasts (dia-
phragm pipe aerator). Thanks to an inter-
mittent aeration, oxygen gets into the se-
wage and microorganisms receive oxygen
for nutrient decomposition. In the process,
activated sludge is generated. The meta-
bolism of these microorganisms purifies the
sewage.
As a rule, the treatment phase lasts approx.
six hours. Beyond that, the plant regulates
itself according to its feeding rate. The se-
wage treatment then proceeds in line with
the "normal phase", "economy phase" or
"holiday phase". (see point 6.1)
