1. SELECTABLE MODES:
Pb - LED #1a - for 12V lead-acid (STD / AGM / GEL) batteries.
LFP - LED #1b - for 12.8V / 13.2V LiFePO
WARNING: Select the correct charge mode for Pb / lead-acid or LFP / LiFePO4 batteries. The charger
may prematurely stop charging if it senses the selection is incorrect.
Supply (Su) - LED #2 - WARNING: SUPPLY mode is not a charge mode. To use this mode go to section 3.
START - SUPPLY.
2. START - CHARGE A BATTERY
a) Turn off AC power to the charger with rocker switch SW1. b) Connect the battery as described in section B.
CONNECTING TO THE BATTERY. c) Turn on AC power with rocker switch SW1.
WARNING: If LED #1a and 1b are blinking together the battery is connected in reverse polarity. Return to a).
d) The Pb (LED #1a), LFP (LED #1b) and Su (LED #2) selection indicators will be (dimly) lit.
To make a charge mode selection press and release the button once for Pb and twice for LFP. Continuing to
press and release the button in rapid succession will cycle selection from Pb through to Su and then back to Pb.
If no further selection is made for 3 seconds the last selected mode LED brightens to confirm selection is now
final. Continue to e). To change selection, return to a).
e) The OptiMate now determines the battery voltage.
Pb & LFP modes: if the connected battery's voltage is 0.5V or higher charging continues automatically, see
STEP 1 - AUTOMATIC ACTIVATION.
LFP mode: If the connected battery measures less than 0.5V, as expected for a deep discharged LiFePO4
battery with battery management system (BMS) that requires a reset, or for a new LiFePO
'sleep mode' (read prior section NEW BATTERIES), follow the procedure described under MANUAL ACTIVATION
(STEP 1).
NOTE: If Pb was selected, no further charging is possible. If a lead-acid battery could not recover to at least 0.5V
when disconnected from vehicle circuitry, it is unlikely the battery will be successfully returned to service.
f) If no battery has been sensed or MANUAL ACTIVATION was not successful the charger will reset after 5
minutes. Return to a) or d) above.
STEP 1 - Charger activation
AUTOMATIC ACTIVATION: The program proceeds directly to STEP 2 & 3 and LED #3 or LED #4 will turn on
depending on condition of the battery.
MANUAL ACTIVATION: Required for LiFePO
protect against deep discharge, or for a new LiFePO
Press the pushbutton until LED #3 starts blinking. Remove finger from pushbutton.
LED #3 now blinks once per second as a special BMS reset pulse is delivered. When the OptiMate senses the
battery BMS has reset, LED #3 turns full on, the reset pulses will automatically discontinue and the program will
continue to STEP 5.
BMS not resetting: LED #3 stopped blinking after one minute and turned off and LED #8 may now be blinking
indicating a possible ERROR. See list below, each with a suggested corrective action. Correct the error, press
and release the button to cancel the ERROR indication and then re-attempt MANUAL ACTIVATION.
1) Battery is connected in reverse polarity. Correct the connections and try again. 2) The vehicle circuitry
powered by the battery is preventing the pulse from being delivered. Disconnect the battery from the vehicle
and try again. 3) The battery's BMS or the battery itself may have suffered damage. Have the battery
professionally assessed.  4) Temperature as measured at the battery charger is below -20ºC/-4°F or above
55°C/131°F. Follow instructions under section 'LED #8 flashing rapidly- ERROR!'. 5) A deep discharged
battery may not hold sufficient voltage to power its own BMS system. After cancelling the error, now place and
hold finger on selection button for 10 or more seconds until LED #3 turns full on. The program now continues
directly to STEP 4. Remove finger from pushbutton.
STEP 2 & 3 - Battery State of charge & ambient temperature
Battery voltage is measured to determine State Of Charge (SOC) and the initial charge step.
LFP mode: The charge program limits charge current if the temperature measured at the OptiMate is equal or
below 0ºC / 32ºF or above 45ºC / 113ºF. If the temperature was initially below 0ºC / 32ºF charge current is
limited for the first hour after which the battery is expected to have increased its internal temperature.
