Alternative leak test
Carry out an alternative leak test if the lung demand valve remains connected to
the self-contained open-circuit breathing apparatus and the mask:
1. Close the cylinder valve.
2. Empty the system of all air by breathing and perform the leak test.
3. Re-open the cylinder valve.
4.5.2
Mask with other connections
The masks with PE, ESA, and RA-type connectors can be tested in two ways:
With connected lung demand valve or respiratory filter.
Without lung demand valve or respiratory filter.
However, this test does not check whether the mask/lung demand valve or
mask/respiratory filter connection is tight.
With connected lung demand valves or respiratory filters (PE or RA)
1. Screw the lung demand valve or respiratory filter into the connector until
they are tight.
Have a second person check the tightness and correct connection.
2. Close the medium-pressure hose with your thumb or close the filter opening
with the ball of your hand.
3. Inhale and hold your breath.
There must be no noticeable air ingress, otherwise check the mask fit.
The exhaled air must be able to escape without obstruction through the
exhalation valve.
4. Repeat the seal test twice.
5. If necessary, connect the self-contained open-circuit breathing apparatus or
the airline equipment.
With connected lung demand valves or respiratory filters (ESA)
1. Insert the lung demand valve into the connector or screw in the respiratory
filter until it fits tight.
2. To check that it fits tightly, twist and pull the lung demand valve.
Have a second person check the tightness and correct connection.
3. Close the medium-pressure hose with your thumb or close the filter opening
with the ball of your hand.
