22 Cleaning
► Do not use a pressure washer to clean the
chain saw or otherwise spray it with water or
other liquids.
► Keep the battery housing and guides free from
foreign matter and clean as necessary with a
soft brush or soft, dry cloth.
22.2
Cleaning the Guide Bar and
Saw Chain
WARNING
■ To reduce the risk of personal injury from unin‐
tended activation, remove the battery and
engage the chain brake before carrying out
any cleaning work,
saw should carry out only the cleaning descri‐
bed in this manual.To help prevent injuries,
always wear heavy-duty work gloves when
handling the chain.
To properly clean the guide bar and chain:
► Remove the guide bar and the chain,

► Clean the oil outlet duct (1), oil inlet bore (2)
and groove (3) with a brush, a slightly damp‐
ened cloth or resin solvent, such as STIHL
Resin Remover & Lubricant. Do not use deter‐
gents.
► Clean the chain with a brush, a slightly damp‐
ened cloth or resin solvent. Do not use deter‐
gents.
► Do not use a pressure washer to clean the
guide bar or chain or otherwise spray them
with water or other liquids.
22.3
Cleaning the Air Filter
Very fine dust can collect in the air filter and
block proper air flow. The air filter must be
cleaned with the STIHL special cleaner or
another cleaning agent with a pH value higher
than 12.
To clean the air filter:
► Switch off the chain saw,
► Engage the chain brake,
► Remove the battery,

► Turn the screws (1) counterclockwise until the
shroud (2) can be removed.
► Remove the shroud.
► Turn the screw (3) counterclockwise until the
air filter (4) can be removed.
► Remove the air filter.
► Knock out the air filter or blow it clear with
compressed air from the inside outwards.
► If the air filter is damaged, replace it.
► Spray the outside and inside of the air filter
with STIHL special cleaner or a cleaning agent
with a pH value higher than 12.
► Allow STIHL special cleaner or cleaning agent
to act for 10 minutes.
► Rinse the inside then the outside of the air fil‐
ter under running water. Never spray the air fil‐
ter with a pressure washer.
► Allow the air filter to air dry.
► Place the air filter in position.
► Insert the screw (3) and tighten it.
► Place the shroud in position.
► Tighten the screws (1).
WARNING
■ Cleaning agent may cause irritation if it con‐
tacts the skin or eyes. Avoid contact. Wear
suitable eye protection. Read and follow all
safety precautions that accompany the clean‐
ing agent. In case of contact with the skin:
Wash affected areas with plenty of water and
soap. In case of contact with the eyes: Rinse
eyes with plenty of water for at least
15 minutes and seek medical advice.
NOTICE
■ To reduce the risk of damage, never use a tool
to install, pry out or re-insert the air filter.
NOTICE
■ Exposure to high temperatures and oil can
damage the air filter and reduce filtering effi‐
ciency. Allow the filter to air dry away from
external heat sources. Keep the filter away
from oil.
