At insufficient combustion of diesel exists soot. Those soot particles or fine
dust, are unhealthy. Therefore the DPF (Diesel Partikel Filter) is also called
soot filter. This is a mechanical filter that retains soot particles and fine dust
while the exhaust gases flow through. When the DPF is full of soot, it must be
regenerated. However, the soot filter will become saturated at some point
and will have to be cleaned. This cleaning process is called regeneration. The
regeneration process is a procedure wich is controlled by the ECU. During
regeneration, extra diesel fuel is injected during each exhaust stroke, so that
the DPF is brought to such a temperature that the soot present is still burned.
The trailer is also equipped with a heat shield , which protects components from
the released heat.
