5.2) BLOCSTOP
TM
BSA
5.2.1) Installation of fall arrest devices
IMPORTANT: The fall arrest device on the fall arrest
wire rope and the fittings used to secure the fall arrest device
must ensure a tensile strength at least 4 times that of the
nominal capacity of the BLOCSTOP
TM
BSA fall arrest device.
This is indispensable to ensure the mechanical strength of the
installation should a fall occur.
Before you begin to install the fall arrest device, check that the
unit is in good visible condition and, in particular that:
- there are no signs of impact or deformation on the fall arrest
device,
- the lever (item 2, fig. 2) swivels freely on its swivel pin (item 8,
fig. 2),
GB
- when locked, the lever is positioned as shown in fig. 6,
- the marking on the device is legible and compliant with the
information in the "markings" section for the unit,
- holes A and B (fig. 2) are not soiled or obstructed,
- the roller (item 4) turns freely on its pin and does not show
any signs of damage which could deteriorate the lifting wire
rope.
Proceed as follows to install the fall arrest device:
- the unit must be oriented vertically as shown in fig. 2 with
roller (item 4) upward and mounting holes (item 7)
downward,
- secure the fall arrest device to the suspended platform using
the two anchor holes (item 7, fig. 2) to obtain a distance (f)
between the fall arrest wire rope (item 5, fig. 2) and the lifting
wire rope (item 6, fig. 2) as indicated in table 5 of §4.
IMPORTANT: For correct operation of the fall arrest
device, the distance (f) between the fall arrest wire rope and
the lifting wire rope must be strictly observed. This dimension
is essential to correct operation of the fall arrest device.
DANGER
: The construction on which the fall arrest
device is mounted must have a rigid link with the suspended
platform (fig. 14).
DANGER
: It is prohibited to install the fall arrest device
on a mobile stirrup (fig. 15).
- For attachment, use the screws supplied with the fall arrest
device. If these are not suitable for the installation
configuration, use the following screws:
• BSA 15 and BSA 20: 2 screws M12x... class 8.8 min.
with locknuts.
• BSA 35: 2 screws M22x... class 8.8 min., with locknuts.
- tighten the two mounting screws in accordance with the
trade practices for bolted assemblies.
5.2.2) Preparation of wire ropes
IMPORTANT: Before installing the lifting wire rope in the
fall arrest device on the detection roller (item 4, fig. 2), check
that the wire rope is installed in compliance with the
recommendations of the lifting system installation manual and
this manual, in particular, as concerns the distance between
wire ropes (f).
DANGER
: The fall arrest wire ropes are special wire
ropes. Use of any wire rope other than those recommended by
TRACTEL
®
can result in a serious malfunction when the fall
arrest system is used.
Make sure that the wire rope lengths are compliant with the
recommendations of the lifting system installation manual.
Regularly check the condition of the fall arrest wire rope. In
particular, check that:
• the wear of the wire rope is < 10% of its nominal
diameter Øc (fig. 20),
• the wire rope does not show any deformation or
damage as detailed in the manual for the lifting device.
IMPORTANT: Check that the fall arrest wire rope is
always lightly greased. Only multiple purpose off-the-shelf
greases should be used. Do not use lubricants containing
molybdenum disulfide or graphite additives.
5.2.3) Assembly and installation of wire rope in fall
arrest device
- place the suspended platform directly in line with the
suspension points,
- secure the lifting and fall arrest wire ropes. The fall arrest
wire rope must be suspended freely next to the lifting wire
rope,
- unlock the fall arrest device by raising the lever (item 1,
fig. 17) in the direction indicated by the arrow,
- place the lifting wire rope (item 1, fig. 18) between the
detection roller (item 2, fig. 18) and the wire rope guide
(item 3, fig. 18),
- insert the lifting wire rope in the hoist as instructed in the
installation manual for the hoist installed on the suspended
platform,
- using the hoist, raise the suspended platform by 0.1 to 0.2 m.
The lifting wire rope should be tensioned and the fall arrest
device should be in the unlocked position,
- manually insert the fall arrest wire rope in hole A (fig. 2) of
the fall arrest device, then have it come out through hole B
(fig. 2). Pull on the free end of the fall arrest wire rope until it
is tensioned,
- check that the distance (f) complies with the value indicated
in table 5 for the fall arrest device used. If this is not the case,
correct the installation to ensure the distance required (f).
IMPORTANT: The wire rope coming out of the fall arrest
device must be free to move.
- Ballast the fall arrest wire rope (item 1, fig. 19) by fastening,
at 0.2 m of the ground, a ballast weight of:
• 9.5 kg for BSA15 and BSA20,
• 2 x 9.5 kg for BSA35.
Optionally, the ballast weight (spherical counterweight of
9.5 kg; ref.021488) can be supplied on order by TRACTEL
6. UTILISATION
NOTE
: Protect the fall arrest devices against
soiling. Take the necessary measures to prevent foreign
matter from getting into the unit with the fall arrest wire rope.
This recommendation applies in particular in those cases
- 20 -
where concrete may be projected or synthetic resins sprayed,
or others.
Deposits of this kind can result in malfunctions representing a
safety hazard for the operators.
6.1 BLOCSTOP
TM
BS fall arrest device
Utilisation of the fall arrest device is identical when used on
either a load lifting and pulling wire rope (fig. 21) or on a fall
arrest wire rope (fig. 22).
Once you have completed the necessary checks as detailed
in §5.1, you can proceed to use the system.
IMPORTANT: When lifting or pulling a load, i.e. when the
wire rope moves into the fall arrest device, the jaws open
slightly, creating no resistance to passage of the wire rope.
Always make sure that the wire rope slides freely in the unit. If
this is not the case, check that the ballast weight is correctly
positioned. If so, replace the fall arrest device by an equivalent
serviceable device and return the defective unit to TRACTEL
or to an approved repair agent for overhaul.
IMPORTANT: To lower or release the load, the fall arrest
device must be unlocked manually by raising the stirrup
(item d, fig. 1) and holding it in the up position throughout the
lowering operation (fig. 23). In the event of a hoist failure or
rupture of the lifting or pulling wire rope, simply release the
stirrup; the fall arrest device unlocks immediately. In the event
of danger, you will instinctively release the stirrup as a natural
self-protection response.
IMPORTANT: Since the fall arrest device cannot be
unlocked under load, the unlock stirrup must be raised before
lowering or releasing the load. If by operator inadvertence, the
fall arrest device locks, the device can be unlocked by slightly
bringing up the load in order to release the fall arrest device
from the load.
6.2 BLOCSTOP
TM
BSA fall arrest device
Once in place, the fall arrest devices do not require ay
operator action.
These devices operate automatically for up and down
movements.
Once you have completed the necessary checks as detailed
in §5.2, you can proceed to use the system.
IMPORTANT: When lifting, continuously check that the
fall arrest wire rope slides freely in the fall arrest device. If this
is not the case, you must mandatorily open the jaws. By
tensioning the lifting wire rope, the jaws will open
automatically. If the jaws do not open automatically, check that
the ballast weight is correctly positioned. If this is not the case,
set the suspended platform on the ground, remove the fall
arrest device and replace it by an equivalent serviceable
®
.
device, then return the faulty unit to TRACTEL
approved repair agent for overhaul.
IMPORTANT: When lowering, you must immediately
check that the fall arrest wire rope slides freely in the fall arrest
device. If this is not the case, you must perform a lifting
movement to tension the lifting wire rope in order to open the
jaws.
IMPORTANT: Do not handle the lever (item 2, fig. 2) by
any means other that the lifting wire rope.
IMPORTANT: Do not hold the lever in the jaw's open
position by any means whatsoever.
7. REMOVAL AND STORAGE
DANGER
: Make sure there is no load on the fall arrest
device before you proceed to remove it. The suspended
platform or load must be set on the ground.
IMPORTANT: You must observe the removal from
®
service recommendations in the lifting system installation
manual.
