above the bench can result in the
workpiece and your hand being
pulled into the saw blade.
c) When making longitudinal cuts,
never use the mitre stop to
guide the workpiece, and when
crosscutting with the mitre
stop, never use the parallel
stop to set the length. Guiding
the workpiece with the parallel
and mitre stops at the same time
increases the probability of the
saw blade jamming and causing
a kickback.
d) When making longitudinal cuts,
always exercise force on the
workpiece between the stop
bar and the saw blade. Use
a push stick if the distance
between the stop bar and the
saw blade is less than 150
mm, and a push block if the
distance is less than 50 mm.
These working aids will help to
keep your hand a safe distance
from the saw blade.
e) Only use the push stick sup
plied by the manufacturer,
or one that has been manu
factured as instructed. The
push stick ensures that there is
enough distance between hands
and saw blades.
f) Never use a damaged or sawed
push stick. A damaged push
stick can break and cause your
hand to come into contact with
the saw blade.
g) Do not do ‚freehand' work.
Always use the parallel stop
or the mitre stop to place and
guide the workpiece. ‚Free-
78
hand' means that the workpiece

is supported or guided by the
hands instead of the parallel stop
or mitre stop. Freehand saw-
ing leads to incorrect alignment,
jamming and kickback.
h) Never reach around or over a
rotating saw blade. Reaching
for a workpiece may cause you
to accidentally come into contact
with the revolving saw blade.
i) Brace long and/or wide work
pieces behind and/or at the
side of the saw bench so that
they stay level. Long and/or
wide workpieces have a tenden-
cy to pitch at the edge of the
saw bench; this causes a loss
of control, the saw blade to jam
and kickback.
j) Feed the workpiece even
ly. Do not bend or twist the
workpiece. If the saw blade
jams, switch the power tool
off immediately, pull out the
plug and deal with whatever
has caused the jamming. The
saw blade being jammed by the
workpiece may cause a kickback
or block the motor.
k) Do not remove any sawnoff
material while the saw is run
ning. Sawn-off material can set-
tle between the saw blade and
the stop bar or in the protective
cover, and pull your fingers into
the saw blade during removal.
Switch the saw off and wait for
the saw blade to come to a com-
plete stop before removing the
material.
l) Use an additional parallel stop
which comes into contact with
the surface of the bench when
