Principle of Operation

Socket fusion is a jointing process in which two compo-
nents are joined to each other by welding both, in two
separate welding operations, into a fitting of slightly
larger diameter than the components. The joint is
achieved through the plasticization of the component
butt and the inside surface of the fitting, the insertion
of the component into the fitting, and allowing them
to cool down as one new piece. The process includes the
following operating steps:
• The socket welding machine is placed on a stable and
level surface. The cover part of the optionally avail-
able transport and set-up box can also be used as the
surface for operation.
• The clamps that match the size of the components to
be jointed are installed on the machine carriages.
• The spigot and the socket that match the size of the
components to be jointed are installed on the heating
element.
• The heating element is connected to the power supply
and set to the temperature applicable to the intended
welding operation. Then the user has to wait for this
nominal temperature to be effectively reached.
• The fusion depth is defined using the roller of the
setpoint assistant, and the carriages of the machine
are moved to the welding start-up position using the
pushbutton of the setpoint assistant.
• The component is properly cut, possibly chamfered
depending on the welding standard, deburred and
cleaned, then pre-clamped, just as the fitting, both
aligned to each other with the carriage in the start-up
position, and finally clamped securely.
• The component is slid into the socket, the fitting, over
the spigot, and both are heated to plasticization.
• After the heating time, they are removed from the
heating element and it is removed from in-between
them.
• The plasticized component butt is then pushed into
the jointing fitting, the inside surface of which has
also plasticized, and no external forces must be ap-
plied prior to their having completely cooled down.
