8.5. Disinfecting and/or sterilising
Select heated or chemical disinfection according to local standards for disinfection
and the table of applicable methods.
Washing machine - heat-disinfecting program:
Automatic washing machines designed for medical equipment will normally
include program cycles for heat disinfection.
Autoclaving: Use standard autoclaving equipment adjusted for 134 °C (273 °F) for
resuscitator parts according to the table above.
Sterilisation by gravity steam autoclave running a full cycle at 134 degrees Celsius
for 10 minutes at a standard pressure and then dry 30 minutes.
For drying and cooling leave the parts to dry and/or cool completely before
reassembling the resuscitator.
Note: that it is the user's responsibility to qualify any deviations from the recom-
mended method of processing
Ambu product testing has shown that the resuscitator is still fully functional
following autoclaving 30 times. The actual number of times that the product can be
autoclaved while maintaining full functionality will vary, and can be both higher and
lower than 30 times, depending on product use, storage, and wear and tear. Always
perform a test of function prior to each use.
8.6. Inspection of parts
After cleaning, disinfecting and/or sterilising carefully inspect all parts for damage
and residuals or excessive wear and replace if necessary. Some methods may cause
12
discoloration of rubber parts without impact on their lifetime. In case of material
deterioration e.g. cracking, the parts should be replaced.
In case of autoclaving, the oxygen reservoir bag can look slightly wrinkled. This has
no impact on its life or function.
When inserting the valve housing of the inlet valve: Make sure that the bag opening
seats smoothly against the flange.
When inserting the patient valve disc: Make sure that the butt of the stem is pushed
through the hole in the middle of the patient valve housing.
When mounting the outlet cap (option): Note that the slot of the outlet cap should
face the patient connector.
8.7. Reassembly
Reassemble the parts of the resuscitator as shown in the illustration. Mark IV (7.1),
Mark IV Baby (7.2)
For Ambu Mark IV Baby, adapter for reservoir bag shall be mounted on the inlet
connector, and the cap on the adapter must be put on the oxygen nipple before
the reservoir bag can be connected to the resuscitator.
9. Test of function 
Resuscitator
Close the pressure-limiting valve with the override cap (This only applies to the ver-
sion with pressure limiting valve) and close the patient connector with the thumb
(8.1). Briskly squeeze the bag. The resuscitator shall offer resistance to the squeeze.
Open the pressure-limiting valve by opening the override cap or by removing the
finger and repeating the procedure. The pressure limiting valve should now be
