– Fuel must only be stored in appropriate containers.
– Refuel out of doors only and do not smoke during filling.
– Re-filling with petrol must be performed before the
engine is started. Never open the tank cap or top up
petrol while the engine is running or hot.
– If the petrol tank overflows, do not attempt to start the
engine. The machine must be removed from the area
contaminated with petrol. All attempts at starting must
be avoided until the petrol fumes have dispersed.
– For safety reasons, petrol tanks and tank caps must be
replaced (regularly).
d) Replace damaged exhaust silencers.
e) Before using the machine, always visually inspect the
tools for wear or damage. To avoid imbalance, worn or
damaged parts and retaining pins must be replaced in
pairs.

23.4 Handling

a) Do not run the engine in an enclosed space where
dangerous carbon monoxide may accumulate.
b) Only work during the day or when there is enough light.
c) Always ensure good stability on slopes.
d) Only work at walking speed.
e) For machines on wheels: only work at right-angles to and
never up or down the slope.
f) Be particularly careful when changing direction on a slope.
g) Do not mow on excessively steep slopes.
h) Be particularly careful when turning the machine around
or pulling it towards you.
i) Do not alter the basic setting of the engine or run it at
excessive engine speeds.
j) Start the engine carefully in accordance with the
manufacturer's instructions and keep your feet a safe
distance from the tool(s).
k) Never put hands or feet on or underneath rotating parts.
l) Never lift or carry a machine with the engine running.

m)The engine must be stopped:
– if you leave the machine;
– before you refuel.
n) The throttle valve must be closed when the engine is
running on. If the machine has a petrol shut-off valve, it
must be closed after working.

23.5 Maintenance and Storage

a) Always make sure that all nuts, pins and bolts are securely
tightened so the machine is in a safe operating condition.
b) Never store the machine with petrol in the tank inside a
building in which the petrol fumes could come into contact
with naked flames or sparks or could be ignited.
c) Allow the engine to cool down before storing the machine
in an enclosed space.
d) In order to prevent fire hazards, keep the engine and
exhaust free from plant trimmings or leaking lubricant.
e) In the interests of safety, replace all worn or damaged
parts.
f) If it is necessary to drain the tank, this must be done out
of doors.
