Discotom-5 is a high performance ta-
ble-top cut-off machine with a strong
3.7 kW (5.0 HP) motor. It is designed
for cut-off wheels with a diameter of
250 mm (10"). Discotom-5 can be op-
erated both automatically and manu-
ally, making it suitable for a wide range
of applications.
Automatic Cutting made Easy
Automatic cutting mode is engaged by
a simple press key. After pressing the
Start key the cutting table with the
clamped workpiece will move forward
towards the cut-off wheel at the set
feed speed. Before cutting, you can of
course position the cut-off wheel to
compensate for the wear of the cut-off
wheel.
Manual mode for Fast and
Uncomplicated Cutting
When operating the cut-off machine
manually, the cutting table with the
clamped workpiece is easily posi-
tioned under the cut-off wheel, again
with simple press keys. You then
press the Start key and pull the cut-
ting handle to begin cutting.
Very High Cutting Capacity
You can cut workpieces with a diam-
eter of up to 80 mm (3.1") on the
Discotom-5. In automatic mode though,
the cutting table is movable up to 200
mm (7.9") enabling cutting of very long
samples. You can for instance cut a
length of 140 mm (5.5") at a work-
piece thickness of 65 mm (2.6").
Electronic Feed Speed Reduction
When cutting automatically, you
choose a feed speed from 0.1 to 2.5
mm/sec. If the feed speed is set too
high and the machine cannot cut
through the workpiece, Discotom-5
will automatically reduce the feed
speed and continue cutting.
This may repeat itself up to 5 times
and prevents damage or burns on the
sample surface.
Effective Cooling of the Cutting Area
A very important design detail is that
the water cooling tubes are integrated
into the cut-off wheel guard. The cool-
ing water is applied to the cut-off
wheel under high pressure and at a
right angle. The cooling water thereby
"breaks" the thin layer of air surround-
ing the spinning cut-off wheel, and the
result is excellent cooling of the cut-
ting area. Discotom-5 is available with
a large 65 l recirculating cooling unit,
ensuring that the cooling water does
not overheat.
Monitoring the Load
on the Cutting Motor
The front panel includes a LED-bar
indicating the load on the cutting mo-
tor. The bar is divided into three areas,

a green area showing that the load on
the cutting motor is ok, a yellow area
indicating that the load is growing to-
wards the maximum and the red area
indicating that the motor is overloaded.
In automatic cutting mode the LED-
bar will show the load on the cutting
motor and if the red area is reached
the feed speed will be reduced. When
cutting manually the LED-bar gives a
good indication of how much force to
put on the workpiece.
Corrosion resistant Cutting
Chamber
Although Discotom-5 is a high per-
formance table-top cutting machine, it
takes up remarkably little room - only
650 mm (26") in width and 580 mm
(23.2") in depth.
The cutting chamber, made of corro-
sion resistant materials, is provided
with a 200 mm x 265 mm (7.9" x
10.4") cutting table, which is easily
moved up to 200 mm (7.9") by control
keys. The cutting table is made of cor-
rosion resistant cast aluminium and is
fitted with a top surface of stainless
steel bands. These steel bands are
easily exchanged if damaged or worn.
A built-in, adjustable flush hose makes
daily cleaning quick and efficient, and
a powerful lamp lights up the cutting
chamber allowing you to monitor the
cutting process through the large win-
dow in the protection guard. An ex-
haust system may be connected.
