2.4
Decomposition System AOD 1 is designed for the oxidative decomposition, under
pressure, of solid and liquid samples that contain halogens and sulphur. It provides
a fast, safe, low-maintenance method of quantitatively determining halogens and
sulphur by decomposition.
The Decomposition System AOD 1 is built up from several components, whose
function can also be extended with the aid of suitable accessories. To ensure the
greatest possible safety during a decomposition test, IKA
Guard AOD 1.3. You will find a description of the individual components in Section 4
"Description of System Components" or in their operating instructions .
The system has the following important features:
-WERKE accepts no liability for damage or costs that arise due to accidents,

System Features

In an atmosphere of pure oxygen, core temperatures of over 1300°C, at pres-
sures up to 195 bar, can be reached in the crucible.
The decomposition vessel is made from a highly halogen-resistant special alloy.
For quantitative determination of fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine and sulphur,
the inner surfaces and parts are catalytically activated.
The gases generated during combustion can be dissolved in a special absorp-
tion solution, which is added to the decomposition vessel.
Manual ignition of the sample using the remote ignition unit.
Guard AOD 1.3 for safe operation (optional).
The detection method for dissolved ions can be selected by the user. Ion chro-
matography, detection with ion-selective electrodes, or titration are suggested
methods.
The following publications use these methods:
– GIT 4/96: Determination of element specific halide- and sulfur-contents in
organic matrices
– GIT 7/96: New aspects within calorimetry
– GIT 11/96: Determination of calorific values with simultaneous halogen and
sulfur decomposition
These publications are available from IKA
