Before every decomposition trial, the crucible and decomposition vessel must be
thoroughly rinsed in distilled water and then dried. When weighing the sample use
only clean implements. Avoid all skin contact with internal parts of the system – this
can be a cause of false results.
Sample weighing
The operating temperature of the decomposition vessel must not exceed 50°C.
This corresponds to a maximum energy input of ca. 20000 J. Choose the sam-
ple mass accordingly. If the energy input is too large, the decomposition ves-
sel may be damaged.
With damaged decomposition vessels, there is a danger of bursting!
Always observe the operating instructions for the decomposition vessel!
When working with an unknown substance, start with a very small sample to
determine its energy potential, and keep a safe distance from the guard.
The weight of the sample will depend on the test requirements and the halogen or
sulphur content of the substance – it may vary between a few milligrams and up to
1 g.

Decomposition Vessel AOD 1.1 is supplied with a fixed platinum ignition wire
C 5012.3. This fixed ignition wire is, however, subject to wear, and should be
checked after every combustion test. If the wire has become visibly thinner, it must
be replaced (see the operating instructions for Decomposition Vessel AOD 1.1)
