SYSTEM PREPARATION
Read and understand the warnings in the Safety
i
Precautions section at the front of this manual
before operating this equipment.
The equipment has been pre-adjusted at the
i
factory. However, adjustments may need to be
made.
4.1

APPLICATOR DIE SETUP

Adjustments to the applicator die should be
i
made prior to heating the system. The applicator
has two adjustment locations. For initial setup
and checking, use a new die.
The die is heavy and contains some sharp edges.
Wear protective gloves when installing or
changing to avoid injury.
1. Locate the applicator on a clean flat surface.
2. Make sure the material valve is completely closed.
3. Open the die shield (see figure 2, item 6a). Swivel the
locking tab around to secure the door in an open position.
4. Pull the die retainer lever away from the unit with one
hand. The pins on the retainer should be nearly vertical.
5. While holding the die with the other hand, align the claws
of the die with the pins on the die retainer. Rest the claws
on the retainer with a pin located in the space between
the claws.

Setting the die on the pins is easiest using the
i
space created by opening the die shield.

6. Manually raise the die to make sure there is clearance
around the material valve. Do not let the die pivot from
right to left during this step. Wait to connect the die
linkage.
7. Once the die has been attached to the retainer, visually
inspect the way the die runners rest on the surface.
i
8. If an adjustment is needed, using a 9/16" wrench, loosen
the two hex nuts on the face of the die shroud. Raise
or lower the backing plate to accommodate proper
adjustment. When re-tightening the nuts, be sure the gap
in the respective slots is even.
9. When die runners are properly adjusted, the die linkage
can be attached. Unlook the die lever and rotate forward
as far as it will go. Adjust the linkage smaller if it hits the
floor.
10. Manually open the die by depressing the clevis yoke
forward. Be sure the leading carbides to not rise from the
floor.
11. Hold the die in this position and adjust the length of the
linkage so the hole in the linkage tab lines up with the hole
in the clevis yoke on the die.
12. Insert the pin and flip the ring to retain the pin, making
sure there is no interference with the road surface.

13. Rotate the die lever back to close and lift the die. Check
the retainer pivot adjustment by manually rotating the
retainer assembly from left to right.
i
The hooks on the die should slide over the top
of the shaft on the retainer, while the pins on
the retainer should be on the topside of the die
hooks.
This method of attachment should allow for
the die to have down pressure from the torsion
spring on the retainer.
The ideal setting should allow for a clearance
of 1/32" on the leading carbides. The trailing
carbides should be contacting the surface evenly.
It is recommended that the pin be inserted from
the outside in. This will keep your hands away
from the die in case it slips and falls.
Ideal adjustment should be a slight resistance on
movement. Too loose or too tight and the die
will not perform properly during line application.
