c) Oil change
WARNING! Make sure all moving parts have stopped and
that the log splitter is disconnected from power source.
1. The cylinder must be in the retracted position.
2. Remove oil dipstick cap.
3. Place a container that can hold more than 6 litres under
the log splitter.
4. Unscrew the drain plug (A) and seal (B) (located under
the splitter table).
5. Drain the oil into the container.
6. Once the oil tank is empty, reassemble drain plug (A) and
seal (B).
7. Add 4L of new hydraulic oil with a clean funnel.
8. Clean the dipstick and the seal.
- Check the oil level by inserting the dipstick in the tank
- Remove the dipstick and check that the oil level is
between two marks [a] and [b].
9. Check the gasket. Replace if damaged.
10. Tighten thoroughly the oil dipstick cap.
11. Regularly check the oil level; and refill when necessary.
Remarks:
1. Check oil level regularly with dipstick. Low oil level can damage the oil pump.
2. The oil should be completely replaced once a year.
3. Before oil replacement, make sure moving parts are stopped and the log splitter is disconnected from
main power source.
4. Make sure no dirt or debris finds its way into the oil tank.
5. After oil replacement, start the log splitter a few minutes without load (without splitting wood).
6. Collect used oil and dispose of in accordance with local environmental legislation. It is prohibited to
dump waste oil into the environment or to mix it with other waste.
Recommended oil
- Following hydraulic oils or equivalent are recommend for the log splitter's hydraulic
system: Aral Vitam GF22, BP Energol HLP-HM 22, Mobil DTE 11, SHELL Tellus 22 or equivalent.
- Do not use other types of oil! The use of any other type of oil will adversely affect the operation
of the hydraulic cylinder.
Hydraulic system
- The hydraulic system is a closed system with oil tank, oil pump and control valve.
- Do not alter or tamper with the factory installed system.
- Check the oil level regularly.
- Too low oil level could damage the oil pump.
- Check the hydraulic and screw connections regularly for leaks, tighten them if necessary.
6.3- Sharpening the wedge
- The splitting knife (wedge) is a wearing part which should be sharpened or replaced with a new one,
as deemed required.
- After using the log splitters for some time or when required, sharpen the cutting knife (wedge) using
a fine-toothed file and smooth any burrs or crushed area along the cutting edge.
