9.3. GEAR UNITS WITH FORCED FEED
LUBRICATION
For the different parts of the lubrication system, refer to service manual of the
lubrication and cooling equipment and/or the technical leaflets concerning
the specific components.
9.4. GEAR UNIT DRIVEN BY A TWO SPEED MOTOR
When switching from the higher to the lower speed, first decelerate so that
the motor must accelerate when switched on at the lower speed. In this way
high synchronisation peak torques can be avoided.

10. MAINTENANCE

M
Maintenance operations are limited to check oil level, to regular oil change,
to regrease the lubrication points and filter cleaning.
Oil quantity : see paragraph 6.4, page 9.
Oil draining : see paragraph 6.8, page 10.

10.1. INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE

!
Rotating parts may cause harm and damage.
For inspection and maintenance always de-
energize the drive and make sure that the gear
unit and the drive are externally secured against
unintentional switch-on or movement.

LUBRICATION POINTS

10.2.1 GENERAL DIRECTIVES
Handle any lubricant or oil with care and according to the
handling and safety instructions to be supplied by the lubricant
supplier on customer's request. These instructions have to be
handed over to any personnel performing installation, mainte-
nance or repair of the gear unit.
Use clean oil from clean drums. Avoid any penetration of abrasive particles
and water. The water content should be no higher than 0.05% (derived fol-
lowing titration method accepted by the oil manufacturer).
To improve the steadiness of the bearing life span, it is highly recommended
to use oil that has an initial oil cleanliness of -/15/12 (or better) according to
ISO 4406.
Refer to the oil supplier to obtain this oil quality.
It is recommended to exchange the oil before summertime,
hence running with new fresh oil in the most critical period
when thermal load is higher.
If the gear unit is provided with a heater, disconnect the heater
from the electric supply before draining the oil.
Drain the oil while unit is still warm. Be careful while draining the hot oil, use
an appropriate hot oil recipient.
Every time the lubricant is renewed, it is recommended to flush the gear unit
and the corresponding lubrication and cooling system with the new oil. Drain
the used flushing oil. Check to make sure that the lubrication and cooling
system items are well drained.
Don't forget to renew the filter cartridge.
Operating procedure and specifications are mentioned in the service manual
of the lubrication and cooling equipment and / or the technical leaflets for
the specific instrumentation.
Steel mesh filter cartridge may be used again after thorough cleaning in a
solvent, disposable filters can not be cleaned.
External dipsticks and sight glasses should be periodically
checked against the gear unit dipstick.
10.2.2 OIL CHANGE AND REGREASING
The first oil change
After 100 hours and not later than 800 hours of service:
- First regrease the lubrication points, if present (see paragraph 10.4).
The lubrication points have to be regreased while the gear unit is warm.
- Change the oil. Use new oil or use the removed oil after filtering.
Filter the removed oil volume at least 10 times with a 10 µm filter or
smaller. The filter must be compatible with the used oil. Don't use the filter
of the lubrication system.
- After filtering the oil, renew the filter cartridge of the lubrication system of
the gear unit.

Filter (if present)
Renew the filter cartridge after every 800 hours of operation unless the filter
has a contamination indicator. Before renewing the filter cartridge, run the
gear unit a while after regreasing if this applies.
Grease lubrication (if lubrication points are present)
Bearings: regrease all lubrication points after every 800 hours of operation
(see paragraph 10.4).
Labyrinth seals: regrease all lubrication points after every 3000 hours of
operation (see paragraph 10.4).
Subsequent oil changes
After 4000 to 8000 hours or max. 18 months of operation depending on
working conditions:
- first regrease the lubrication points (if present) while the gear unit is warm
(see paragraph 10.4).
- renew the oil. Use clean oil from clean drums. Avoid any penetration of
abrasive particles and water.
- renew the filter cartridge, if present.
10.3. OIL SAMPLE
When the oil sump temperature is frequently 80° to 95°C (175° to 200°F), or
in the event of a dusty or humid atmosphere, it is recommended to have an
oil analysis performed (by a laboratory acknowledged) by the oil brand
name owner after 4000 hours of service in order to determine the expected
lifetime of the oil. Oil sump temperature must never be higher than 95°C
(200°C), since oil then will degenerate very fast.
A representative oil sample should be taken either directly out of the oil sump
- open the unit's inspection cover immediately after shutdown - or by means
of flushing a certain amount of oil (capacity of the drain pipe + 2 litres)
trough the drain cock or service piping before taking the oil sample. Make
sure to use only appropriate and clean sample bottles.
Be careful while draining the hot oil, use an appropriate hot oil

recipient.
Before starting-up, check the oil level with dipstick and make
!
sure to add-up oil when required.
10.4. GREASE LUBRICATION POINTS
See paragraph 6.6 (page10) for the greases to be used.
Grease quantity for bearings: see page 44-45.
Grease quantity for labyrinth seal: see page 46.
Lubrication intervals: see paragraph 10.2.2.
For longer lubrication intervals: consult HANSEN.
10.5. CLEAN THE HEATER
If the gear unit is provided with a heater and to improve the life span of the
heater, it is recommended to clean regularly (at every oil renew) the heater
and to eliminate the deposition.
