10. Driving the vehicle

a) General information
Driving a remote-controlled model vehicle must be accomplished gradually. Start with simple driving exer-
cises (e.g. driving in a circle). Use cones or racing discs to mark out your race course.
Learn how the vehicle responds to steering commands. Practice steering the vehicle when it is moving
towards you.
Model vehicles with combustion engines behave differently to electric models! Electric models allow you
to move the vehicle backwards and forwards and drive the vehicle very slowly. Models with combustion
engines do not reverse (except models with a reverse gear) and are not suitable for travelling at very slow
speeds, as this places strain on the clutch.
Important!
Do not make the fuel-air mixture too lean (insufficient fuel content).
The engine is lubricated by the oil in the fuel. If the mixture is too lean (insufficient fuel content), the engine
will overheat and cause the piston to seize due to insufficient lubrication.
A light white trail of smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe should always be visible when the engine is on
(burnt fuel). If no smoke is visible, turn off the engine and make the mixture richer (use the mixture adjust-
ment screw/main nozzle needle).
To avoid overheating, ensure that sufficient air circulates around the cooling fins on the cylinder head. If
necessary, cut a hole in the vehicle body.
You can use the main nozzle needle to make the mixture richer. However, the mixture should not be too oily.
The optimal engine operating temperature is approximately 100 - 120 °C. Check the temperature by placing a drop of
water on the cooling fins on the cylinder head. If the water evaporates very quickly, the engine is too hot. At the optimal
operating temperature, it should take 3 - 4 seconds for the water to evaporate.
Make sure that the remote control and receiver batteries are fully charged before use.
Check the range of the remote control and ensure that the remote control is working correctly (steering servo, throttle/
brake servo).
Always try to the drive the model at a high speed (after the break-in phase). Avoid short, sudden bursts of the throttle
when you want the vehicle to travel slowly, and avoid travelling slowly when dragging the clutch.
Never drive the vehicle without the body attached. This may result in burn injuries if you accidentally touch the engine
and exhaust.
