Proper protective clothing will reduce
personal injury caused by flying debris or
accidental contact with the saw chain.
Do not operate a chainsaw in a tree.
Operating a chainsaw while up a tree can
cause personal injury.
Always maintain proper position and
operate the chainsaw only when
standing on a fixed, safe and level
surface.
Slippery or unstable surfaces, such as
stairs, may cause loss of balance or
control of the chain saw.
When cutting a branch that is under
tension, watch for springback.
When tension in the wood fibers is
released, the spring-loaded branch can
strike the operator and/or cause the
chainsaw to lose control.
Be very careful when cutting brush and
young trees.
Thin material can catch on the saw chain
and be thrown toward you or throw you
off balance.
Carry the chainsaw by the front handle
with the chainsaw turned off and away
from your body. When transporting or
storing the chainsaw, always attach the
bar cover.
Proper handling of the chainsaw will
reduce the likelihood of accidental contact
with the moving saw chain.
Follow the instructions for lubricating,
tensioning the chain, and changing
accessories.
A poorly tensioned or lubricated chain can
break or increase the possibility of
kickback.
Cut only wood. Do not use the chainsaw
for purposes not intended. For example:
Do not use the chainsaw to cut plastic,
masonry, or non-wood construction
materials.
Using the chain saw for operations other
than those intended could result in a
dangerous situation.
Causes and prevention of kickback by
the operator:
Kickback can occur when the nose or tip
of the guide bar touches an object, or
when the wood closes and pinches the
saw chain in the cut.
In some cases, tip contact can cause a
sudden reverse reaction, causing the
guide bar to rise and return toward the
operator.
Tightening the saw chain along the top of
the guide bar can push the guide bar
quickly toward the operator.
Any of these reactions could cause you to
lose control of the saw, which could result
in serious personal injury. Do not rely solely
on the safety devices built into your saw.
As a chainsaw user, you should take
several steps to keep your cutting jobs
free of accidents or injuries.

Maintain a firm grip, with thumbs and
fingers encircling the chainsaw handles,
with both hands on the saw and position
your body and arm to allow you to resist
kickback forces.
The operator can control kickback forces
if proper precautions are taken. Do not let
go of the chain saw.
