2. Definitions and pictograms

2.1. Definitions
« Supervisor » : Person or department responsible
for the management and safety of use of the product
described in the manual.
« Technician » : Qualified person in charge of the
maintenance operations described and authorised by
the user manual, who is competent and familiar with
the product.
« Operator » : Operational person involved in the use
of the product as it is intended to be used.
« PPE » : Personal protective equipment against falls
from height.
« Connector » :
Connection
components of a fall-arrest system. This is EN 362
compliant.
« Fall arrest harness » : Body harness designed to
arrest falls. It consists of straps and buckles. It features
fall-arrest attachment points marked with an A if they
can be used alone, or marked with A/2 if they are to be
used in combination with another A/2 point. This is EN
361 compliant.
« Fall arrest system with automatic return » : Fall
arrest system with an automatic locking function and an
automatic tension and return system for the retractable
lanyard
« Retractable lanyard » : Connection element for a fall
arrest system with automatic return. It can be made of
wire rope, strap or synthetic fibre depending on the type
of device
« Maximum working load » : Maximum weight of the
operator, equipped with his PPE, work clothes, tools
and components required for his work.
« Fall-arrester
system » : Set
following items:
– Fall arrest harness.
– Self-retracting fall-arrester, or energy shock
absorber, or mobile fall prevention device with
rigid anchoring supports, or mobile fall prevention
device with flexible anchoring supports.
– Anchoring.
– Linking component.

– Fall arrest harness.
– Self-retracting fall-arrester, or energy shock

" Elevation rescue device EN 1496 class B ":
component or subassembly of a rescue equipment
allowing the winching of an operator with the help of a
rescuer from a low point to a high point and equipped
with an additional manually operated lowering function
to lower the operator over a distance limited to 2 m.
" Rescue equipment " means a personal fall protection
system by which a person can save himself or others,
so that any fall is prevented.
2.2. Pictograms
DANGER : Placed at the beginning of a
paragraph, refers to instructions to avoid injury to
persons, including death, serious or minor injuries,
and damage to the environment.
IMPORTANT : Placed at the beginning of a
paragraph, refers to instructions for avoiding a
failure or damage to equipment, but those not
directly endangering the life or health of the operator
or that of others, and/or not likely to cause
environmental damage.
NOTE : Placed at the beginning of a paragraph,
refers to instructions to ensure the effectiveness
and
convenience
maintenance operations.
3. Operation
Checks before use:
• Check the condition of the lanyard over its entire
length:
– The rope, strap, sewing threads must not show
any signs of abrasion, fraying, burns or cuts.
– The wire rope must not show any signs of
bending, abrasion, corrosion, cut wires.
• Check that the lanyard locks when its end is pulled
quickly and that it rolls up and unwinds normally over
its entire length.
• Check the condition of the housing (no deformation,
presence of screws...).
