What should I do if the volume of fluid becomes less and less or if no fluid at
all can be drained?
There can be two possible reasons:
1.
If there is a significant difference in volume compared to the last drainage output or if no fluid
can be drained at all, it is possible that the catheter is blocked or a protein thread is in the access
tip hindering drainage. Try to dislodge the blockage by squeezing and rubbing along the catheter.
If this does not help, please consult your doctor or contact the respective company (please refer
to the contact details on page 25).
2.
If the drainage output continually decreases and you have no symptoms, discomfort or weight
gain, it is possible that there is no longer fluid being produced. Please consult with your doctor
on how to proceed.
Can I shower or have a bath with the catheter?
You can shower as long as the catheter is completely and correctly covered with the self-adhesive film
dressing. If the gauze pads however do get wet during showering, remove the dressing, clean and dry
the area and apply a new dressing. The catheter should not be completely immersed in water either
in the bath or in the swimming pool. Avoid direct contact of the safety valve with bath / shower water.
Please note: We recommend showering before draining or applying a new dressing, so that the
dressing can be promptly changed should it become wet.
What should I do if I accidentally pull out the Catheter?
The Catheter should have grown together with the subcutaneous skin tissue through the polyester
cuff. If the catheter is accidentally pulled out and the cuff is visible, cover the exit site with a sterile
dressing and immediately contact the clinic that carried out the implantation.
How can I tell if I have an infection?
Immediately inform a doctor should you experience pain, skin redness (erythema*), if the skin is warm
to the touch, swelling (oedema*), fever or accumulation of fluid as these can be signs of infection*.
Should you notice a change in colour of the effusion fluid, proceed as described.
Shortly after implantation redness and mild pain can be expected. These symptoms should not last
or become worse.
