ADJUSTING THE SLIDE
Before every operation, ensure the slide moves in a smooth and
controlled manner that is free of lateral movement and vibration.
Otherwise, cutter breakage may occur. To adjust, accomplish the
following:
1.
Place the machine in an upright position, and by means of the
capstan, raise the slide to its highest position.
2.
Clean the brass gib strips and apply a small amount of machine oil
to the wear surfaces.
3.
Lower the slide back to its lowest position.
4.
Bring the slide into the centre of the dovetail slide housing
5.
Loosen the screws to allow free movement of the arbor support
bracket.
6.
Starting with the middle screws, gently feed the screws in until
resistance is encountered.
7.
Move the slide up and down a few times to test the movement and
then make any further adjustments.
7.1 Try to ensure all screws are exerting a uniform pressure on the
slide from top to bottom. A perfectly adjusted slide will
operate freely up and down without any sideways movement.
8.
Raise the slide to its highest position.
9.
Slightly undo the arbor bearing bracket.
10. Using your fingers only, tighten the screws.
11. Place the machine on a steel plate.
12. Connect the tool to the power supply and turn on the magnet.
13. Start up the motor.
14. If the arbor is incorrectly aligned, the arbor support bracket will be
seen to oscillate.
