Decommissioning
■ Storage – Mast Down
In areas where it freezes, do not store system where
water can accumulate in foils. When water freezes it will
rupture aluminum. Store foils under cover, with grooves
facing down or on an angle so water will run out.
■ Storage or Transporting
Do not store or transport system with lower unit extend-
ing beyond mast. Remove masthead clevis pin and shift
furler up so lower unit can be strapped securely to mast.
Some people remove drum assembly and halyard swivel
for storage and transport.
■ After Storage or Transport
After storing or transporting unit, clean thoroughly
including ball bearings. See instructions.
WARNING! Periodically inspect items listed
below and any others as necessary. Failure
to inspect can cause an accident, damage
to your vessel, personal injury or death.
See www.harken.com for additional
safety information.
■ Inspection
Unit for chafe, wear or damage.
Spring tangs on bottom of unit are secured to
ends of clevis pin. Replace if necessary.
Inspect all screws on unit to be sure they have
not loosened.
Turnbuckle locked securely using locknuts or
cotter pins.
Wire for wear or unraveling.

Spread the slide tangs
and lift them off the
special clevis pin.
Use line to make sure the turnbuckle does not slip
into the drum assembly when unstepping the mast.

■ Changing Line
If line needs to be replaced follow instructions for drum
removal for racing on page 52 - 53. Make sure you use a
hog ring crimp on end of line. A knot will catch and create
too much friction. Use hole in hub, not hole in bottom
plate of spool.
■ Lowering the Mast
Mast lowered towards the stern:
1) Rig a secure temporary headstay.
2) Loosen backstay, mainsheet and vang so headstay
is slack.
3) Spread slide tangs and lift them off special clevis pin.
4) Lift drum assembly far enough to pull clevis pin and
lower mast.
Tip: Do not lose special clevis pin.
an additional spacer.
5) To loosen turnbuckle before detaching headstay, see
instructions for Adjusting Headstay, page 36 - 37.

■ Cleaning and Lubricating

Keep unit clean. When you wash boat, flush unit with
soap and fresh water. Remove torque tube cap and care-
fully remove key. Squirt soap and water into top of
torque tube and spin drum to circulate in bearings.
Follow with a high pressure hose.
Occasionally lower sail and flush halyard swivel with
soap and fresh water. After unit has dried, apply a dry
spray lubricant such as McLube.
If unit is removed for trailering, occasionally flush unit
more thoroughtly under running water.
Foils may be cleaned by washing with soap and water. A
scrap of luff tape may be run up foil to scrub inside the
grooves. Foils may be sprayed with McLube
lubricant to reduce friction during sail changes.
