Usage Guidelines
4. Grasp sheet around patient's
waist and slide patient forward
so his/her feet are on the ground.

Transfer from a Bed to Stretcher

Three sheets are required.
1. Place sheet under patient as
described in "Placing Under a
Patient".
2. Place additional third sheet
label and handles side down on
the bed or stretcher to be used
for the transfer.
3. Ensure bed/stretcher is locked
in position.
3. Have caregivers stand on both
ends of bed, grasping handles
and pulling patient towards the
bed or stretcher.

Removing the Transfer Sheet

1. Reach under patient's ankles
and unfold the sheet on itself
(shiny side against shiny side) to
prevent skin shearing.
2. Use a short pull technique,
pulling from the foot to the head
at a 45° angle away from the
body.

Patient and Caregiver Safety Recommendations

Predetermine the number of caregivers required to perform a safe patient
transfer.
1. Explain what will happen and
how the patient can help with the
transfer (tuck in chin, keep hands
on chest).
2. Raise the bed to a safe working
height - waist level for the
shortest health care provider.
3. Ensure the patient is
positioned correctly prior to
transfer to avoid straining
muscles while reaching.
4. The caregiver should be
positioned at the heaviest part of
the patient near their centre of
gravity for stability.
5. Ensure proper hygiene is
always performed prior to and
after each transfer.
