Transfer Sheets

Usage Guidelines

Placing Under a Patient

1. Place two transfer sheets
together with the labels and
handles facing towards the
outside.
2. Starting at the bottom of
the sheet, have two caregivers
fold sheet, keeping the fold
approximately 6 inches in width.
Leave a six inch flap at the end
for the placement of the patient's
head.
3. Ensure patient is in a supine
position. Sheet will be placed
under patient with the folded
ends towards the bed.
4. Place sheet under patient's
shoulders by gently rocking
transfer sheets side to side
with the assistance of another
caregiver.
5. Working in unison (count
1-2-3 pull) the sheets are
unfolded under the patient by
pulling in quick, lateral, unified
movements. Anchor upper hand
to mattress while lower hand
pulls fold.
6. If resistance is encountered
at patient's trunk, gently rock
sheets from side to side and
continue to gently pull until sheet
is fully extended.
Maneuvering the Patient
Patient repositioning should be performed by two caregivers. Caution
should be taken to avoid caregiver and/or patient injury during transfer.
Sliding Over
Caregivers should each be on one
end of the bed. Each caregiver
will grasp the top transfer sheet
via the integrated handles and
pull the patient in the desired
direction.

Log Rolling
1. If on a bed, ensure that the
side rails are raised and the bed
wheels are locked.
2. Pull the transfer sheet up and
towards the patient's body (this
will turn patient on their side).
Friction reducing properties of
the sheet will allow the patient
to remain in the centerline of the
bed.
3. Support patient with pillows or
wedges and remove sheet.
Seated Positioning at Bed Side
Ensure patient is able to remain in seated positioning before
attempting this repositioning.
Ensure proper body mechanics are used while sliding patient.
Ensure patient does not slide off bed.
1. Lift head of bed so patient is
sitting up as straight as possible.
Be cognizant of the fact that the
patient may slide down in bed.
2. Have one caregiver support
patient's back while the other
caregiver bunches the sheet at
the patient's feet.
3. Lift and slide patient's feet
with sheet so patient is now
sitting at the side of the bed.
