Repairing the Cultivator and
Blades
The cultivator and blades cannot be repaired by
the user.

18 Troubleshooting

18.1
Remedying Tiller Faults
Fault
Engine cannot be
started.
Engine difficult to
start or engine power
deteriorating.
Engine overheating.
Engine running
roughly.
Heavy smoke forma‐
tion.

Cause
Insufficient fuel in fuel
tank.
Main switch set to 0
position.
Inferior, dirty or old
fuel in tank.
Spark plug socket
detached from spark
plug or ignition lead
not properly fastened
to socket.
Spark plug dirty,
damaged or elec‐
trode gap incorrect.
Oil bath air filter dirty. ► Clean or replace oil bath air filter.
Engine flooded.
Carburettor iced up.
Water in fuel tank
and carburettor or
carburettor blocked.
Fuel tank contamina‐
ted.
Oil bath air filter dirty. ► Clean or replace oil bath air filter.
Spark plug dirty.
Incorrect fuel used.
Cooling ribs dirty.
Oil level in engine too
low.
Surface of engine
covered in earth.
Engine speed too
high.
Oil bath air filter dirty. ► Clean or replace oil bath air filter.
Incorrect fuel used.
Insufficient fuel in fuel
tank.
Oil level in engine too
high.
Oil bath air filter dirty. ► Clean or replace oil bath air filter.
► If the cultivator or blades are damaged: Do not
use your cultivator and contact your STIHL
servicing dealer for assistance.
Remedy
► Refuel tiller.
► Press main switch.
► Use fresh, good quality unleaded petrol.
► Clean carburettor.
► Clean fuel line.
► Connect spark plug socket.
► Check connection between ignition lead and plug.
► Clean or replace spark plug.
► Adjust electrode gap.
► Remove spark plug and dry; set main switch to 0 and
pull starter rope repeatedly with spark plug removed.
► Allow tiller to warm up to +10 °C.
► Empty fuel tank, clean fuel line and carburettor.
► Clean fuel tank.
► Clean or replace spark plug.
► Check fuel.
► Clean cooling ribs.
► Top up engine oil.
► Remove earth from engine.
► Reduce speed.
► Check fuel.
► Refill fuel tank.
► Drain engine oil.
