7.4 CONTROL COMBUSTION
7.4.1 PRIMARY COMBUSTION:
creates the main flame which develops in contact
with the log; it is promoted by introducing air into the
grate through the rear combustion air pipe.
The primary air adjustment takes place via the lever
on the front of the machine (fig.-6.2-); moving it to
the left (-) decreases the primary air intake. It is
instead increased by moving it to the right (+).
With the fire burning, the lever can be positioned
approximately half open according to the draw of
the flue pipe and the amount of air to be supplied.
For the first ignition of the day, or when using damp
wood, it is advisable to fully open the primary air
element to facilitate ignition.
During operation, the temperature of the registers
may be high, use the glove, as supplied, for their
handling in order to avoid burns.
7.4.2 SECONDARY COMBUSTION:
This is obtained by letting preheated air through
the holes at the top of the back panel. As it
enters the wood insert the air lights the unburned
gasses (carbon monoxide) formed during primary
combustion and transforms them into carbon
monoxide (CO2). The effect is easy to see by the
formation of a bed of flames around the holes where
the secondary air is let in.
