Function and application

A toothed belt on a drive hollow shaft converts the rotation of a motor into a linear motion. As a result,
the slide moves backwards and forwards.
The slide is plain-bearing guided (ELGA-TB-G) or roller-guided (ELGA-TB-RF).
The reference position of the slide can be detected as follows (è Accessories):
– switch lug and proximity sensor in the slots 9
– switch lug and proximity sensor in the sensor bracket
– switch lug and proximity sensor in the mounting accessories (for ELGA-...-F1).
Note
The ELGA-TB toothed belt axis is not braked: If the input torque is not applied, the slide
is freely movable.
Generally, automatic locking of the complete system can be achieved by using motors
with an integrated spring-loaded holding brake or with high self-braking torque (e.g. for
vertical operation).
• Please select the corresponding motors from our catalogue (è www.festo.com/catalogue). As a
result, you will operate a mated pair in which each is especially harmonised with the other.
When using other motors:
• Observe the limit values for forces, torques and speeds (è Chapter 12 Technical data and 13 Char­
acteristic curves).
The toothed belt axis ELGA-TB is intended to be used for fast posi­
tioning of payloads or as a drive when external guides are used. It is
approved for the slide operating mode.
The ELGA-TB is not approved for operating conditions in which ve­
getable and water-soluble greases or oils can penetrate into the
axis.

Transport and storage

• Take the product's weight into account. The ELGA weighs up to 100 kg, depending on the design. For
transport, the transport aids must be positioned at the permissible support spacing
(support spacing è Chapter 13 Characteristic curves).
• The following should be observed with regard to storage:
– short storage times
– cool, dry, UV and corrosion resistant
– no contact with oils, greases or grease-dissolving fumes
In this way you can ensure the performance of the toothed belt.
