The anode rode is a sacrificial metal rod that avoid corrosion and premature failure (leaks) in the tank.
It is a consumable item. Inspect the anode rod after the first six months of operation when you drain
and flush the tank.Replace the anode rod if it's substantially worn out or has depleted. Thereafter,
inspect the anode rod annually or more frequently if needed. If you use a water softener, your anode rod
will deplete faster than normal and as such would need more frequent inspection.
Once the anode rod has been depleted, it will need to be replaced.

contact your plumbing supplier to obtain it. (Anode rods are a
consumable item and are not covered under warranty).Certain water
conditions will cause a reaction between this rod and the water heater,
potentially causing smelly water.
The parts list includes a special anode for such cases in which the
water has a different odor or discoloration due to this reaction.
A water conditioning company might have to be contacted to supply
filtration equipment if the issue persists.
Failure to inspect the anode rode at least once a year could cause the tank
to fail and leak. This condition is not covered under the manufacturer warranty.
