Additional information Electronic preset
counters with serial interface
1 General
The devices are equipped with a serial interface according
to the RS232, RS422 or RS485 standard (see ordering
code). It can be used as well for the external programming
of the device as for the remote reading of the counter value
and the operating parameters.
RS422 and RS485 allow the operation of several devices
using only one serial interface. RS422 accepts up to ten de-
vices (control system not included) on one line, RS485 ac-
cepts 32 devices (control system included).
With RS422 and RS485 interface it has to be observed that
there is no ground connection between the counter and the
control system. Otherwise, ground loops may appear, in
particular for long distance connections, which might affect
the data transmission.
Caution: The interface parameters set must match those of
the control system, otherwise errors might appear during
communication with the superior level system.
2 Addressing the counter via the
serial interface
Communication via simple <ESC> sequences. There is no
need to send a device address for devices with a RS232 in-
terface. The parameter (A) appearing under „Instruction" in
the tables below must be omitted. It has to be sent only for
RS422 or RS485 interfaces. The instructions have to be
closed with <CR><LF>.
The instruction check is only elementary. „Cross-checking"
is only performed partially. If an instruction is sent in an
operating mode in which it is invalid, the device displays „S-
Err". If an instruction with too many parameters is sent to a
device, only the parameters sent first are processed and
the characters sent in addition are ignored.
Example:
Instruction to be sent:
<ESC>V1+123456<CR><LF>
Instruction sent:
<ESC>V1+12345678<CR><LF>
Consequence:
„78" will be ignored.
Instructions requiring no answer to the control device are
acknowledged by the counter with <CR><LF> as long as
there is no error. If an error occurs during reception or if the
instruction cannot be interpreted, the counter answers with
„F" and <CR><LF>.

Example:
Reading of the counter. All characters sent are ASCII cha-
racters.
RS232:
With RS422 or RS485, the device address has to be sent in
addition.
<ESC><0d><0><CR><LF>
Device address 0d. The address is always made up of 2
bytes. A leading zero has always to be sent.
3 Parameters setting
The parameters are programmed after programming of out-
put 2 (model KCT1-6WR-*) or of the output (model KCT1-
6SR-*) and before the end of the programming
3.1 Baudrate
300 Baud
600 Baud
1200 Baud
2400 Baud
4800 Baud
9600 Baud
Attention - for devices with serial interfaces:
The data transmission speed for the serial interface is
specified for max.4,800 Baud. If you use higher speed
(for ex. 9,600 Baud) you may have errors in the data
transmission.
3.2 Transmissionformat
8 Bit, no parity, one stop bit
7 Bit, even parity, one stop bit
3.3 Adress
(Only for RS 422 and RS 485)
The device address has to be in the
range from 00 to 99.
RS422 accepts up to ten devices
(control system not included) con-
nected on one interface, RS485 ac-
cepts 32 devices (control system
included).
