12.0 Troubleshooting

Symptom
Lathe will not start.
Lathe does not come up to
speed.
Lathe vibrates excessively.
Noisy operation
Tool tip burns
Machine turns a taper.
Drill chuck or arbor does not
stay in place.

Protect the environment.
Dispose all packaging material in an environmental friendly manner.
Dispose coolant in an environmentally friendly manner.
Your appliance contains valuable materials which can be recovered or recycled. Please leave it at a specialized institution.

Possible Cause
Lathe unplugged from wall, or motor.
Fuse blown, or circuit breaker tripped.
Cord damaged.
Chuck guard not closed.
Pulley cover removed
Extension cord too light or too long.
Low current.
Base on uneven surface.
Lathe not bolted to the floor
Unbalanced workpiece
Workpiece deflection
Tool deflection
Slide backlash
Slides running dry
Dull tool tip
Chip load too high
Dry change gear hubs.
Dry change gears
Cutting speed too high
Dull tool tip.
Dry cutting.
Feeding too slowly.
Tailstock alignment is offset.
Machine bed is twisted.
Workpiece deflection.
Dirt, grease, etc. on arbor, chuck, or tailstock
quill
Correction *
Check all plug connections.
Replace fuse, or reset circuit breaker.
Replace cord.
Close chuck guard.
Install pulley cover
Replace with adequate size and length cord.
Contact a qualified electrician.
Locate lathe on even floor.
Bolt machine to the floor
Reduce speed
Improve chucking length or diameter, support
on tailstock end
Reduce tool length
Adjust slides
Lubricate with oil
Re-sharpen or change tool
Reduce depth of cut or feed
Lubricate with oil.
Lubricate with grease.
Reduce spindle speed
Re-sharpen or change tool
Use coolant.
Increase feed rate.
Align tailstock position.
Stand supporting surface must be flat. Shim if
needed
Reduce depth of cut or feed
Clean all mating surfaces thoroughly with a
cleaner-degreaser.
