recommended. The SOLO bio bar & chain oil is labeled with the
environmental decal (RAL UZ 48) featuring the blue environmen-
tal protection angel emblem. Bio-degradable bar and chain oil
has a limited life span of two years and should be used within
that time. During extended storage periods, empty the bar oil
reservoir and fill with some SAE motor oil. Run chain saw briefly
to flush out residue of bio-degradable oil from reservoir, oil pick-
up, delivery system and cutting attachment.
When resuming regular use, refill with bio-degradable bar and
chain oil.
OIL PUMP
All SOLO chain saws are equipped with automatic oil pumps.
Please follow instructions under „oil pump adjustment".
CAUTION! Break-in instructions for new saw chains:
Do not start cutting immediately, but run engine
briefly at half throttle speed and wait for oil mark to appear by
holding toward light surface. (fig.11)
Note: Never cut without chain lubrication. Check proper
functioning of oil pump and oil tank level each time before
cutting.
Caution! Never use waste engine oil.
THE CHAIN BRAKE
SOLO chain saws are equipped with a chain brake as standard
equipment. The brake is activated manually or by kick-back force.
The saw chain is stopped within a fraction of a second.
The chain brake is designed for emergency response and to stop
saw chain rotation during the starting procedure (see operating
instructions page 19).
E n g a g e chain brake (stop):
To manually engage the chain brake, push
the hand guard toward the tip of the guide
bar (1)
To r e l e a s e chain brake:
Pull hand guard back toward front handle bar
(2) until it noticeably locks in place (fig.12).
Automatic brake engagement:
The chain brake can be activated to stop the saw chain, if during
cutting, the guide bar tip and rotating chain contacts wood or a
foreign object. This results in a condition known as „kick back"
during which the reaction of the chain drives the saw straight
back toward the operator (fig.13).
Warning! Modification to the hand guard and brake
assembly is not permitted.
Caution! If the chain brake is engaged in the stop
position, the engine must not be operated at any other than
idle speed. The brake must be released before increasing engine
speed.
SAFETY GUIDELINES AND PRECAUTIONS
General Precautions:
- Never work alone since someone should be nearby in case of
an emergency.
14
- Loan chain saw only to experienced operators. Be sure to provide
the owner's manual with the saw.
- First time users should be instructed by the seller on the
characteristics and operating technique in order to become
familiar with the chain saw.
- Children and juveniles under the age of 18 should not operate
the chain saw. Exempt from this would be juveniles who are 16
years or older and are under expert adult supervision.
- Operating the chain saw requires a high degree of attention
and concentration.
- Only work when in good physical condition. Becoming fatigued
can lead to carelessness and accidents. Carry out all cutting jobs
carefully and cautiously.
- Never work while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.(fig.14)
PERSONAL SAFETY GEAR
To prevent injury to head, eyes, hands, feet, and hearing, the
following protective gear must be worn: (fig.15)
1. Protect your face and your eyes from flying chips by wearing a
safety face shield and safety goggles.
2. Clothing should be functional but not hindering in any way.
Wear snug but comfortably fitting clothing. Avoid wearing
clothing items which can be snagged by the chain. We
recommend the wear of a Forester's jacket with safety color
patches on the shoulders.
3. Wear cuffless pants or tuck pants into safety boots. We
recommend specially designed overalls with safety chaps or
inserts.
4. Always wear a safety helmet or hard hat in the working area.
During all cutting jobs, overhead hazards such as falling limbs
present great danger.
We recommend the safety helmet be fitted with ear protectors
and facial safety shield.
5. To prevent hearing damage, wear appropriate ear protectors
1
or ear plugs.
6. Always wear special leather „non-slip" safety gloves when
cutting. Never touch the rotating saw chain!
7. Wear firm protective shoes with non-slip soles. Special safety
2
shoes with steel caps and cut guard inserts are recommended.
Observe all safety rules by local authorities such as trade
organizations, workmen's compensation agencies, insurers, etc.
8. Working in storm damaged areas should only be carried out
by highly experienced persons.
9. Always hold chain saw with both hands when cutting.
10. Avoid inhaling exhaust fumes while working. Use of an engine
powered chain saw in enclosed areas is prohibited.
BASIC RULES FOR SAFE OPERATION
1. Kick-back
- During cutting with the saw chain,
dangerous kick-back may occur.
- The kick-back is a reverse reacting force created by the chain
on the upper nose quadrant contacting wood, when pinched in
the cut, or touching any other hard object.
- At this moment, the chain saw is uncontrollably forced back in
an arc or pushed against the operator.
