DR Steam Locomotive 99 7234-0
THE PROTOTYPE
To replace some of their antiquated
models, and to substitute those
steam locomotives which were lost
in the war or due to reparations paid,
the Deutsche Reichsbahn ordered
seventeen new steam locomotives
with 1,000 mm track width from the
railway manufacturer "Karl Marx"
(LKM) in Babelsberg. Their design
ressembled those standard locomo-
tives 99 221-223 which were built in
1931 by Berliner Maschinenbau AG
BMAG (previously Louis Schwartz-
kopff) for the Deutsche Reichsbahn
Gesellschaft. The new locomotives
were numbered from 99 231 to 247.
Like the standard locomotives, they
feature a wheel arrangement of 2-10-
2 and a nomimal power of 700 h.p.
Initially, the engines which were
delivered between 1955 and 1957 to
serve in the Harz Mountains faced
some problems, but afterwards they
proved their excellence. Four loco-
motives initially worked the Eisfeld –
Schönbrunn line in Thuringia. When
the line was closed in 1973, they
were relocated to the Railway Works
Wernigerode.
When a DR-based numbering sys-
tem was introduced in 1970, the run-
ning numbers of the narrow-gauge
steam locos were altered by adding a
"7", indicating a track width of
1,000mm, in front of the original
ordinal. Additionally, a check digit
was added. On February 1, 1993 the
recently founded "Harzer Schmal-
spurbahnen GmbH" took over the
network and the rolling stock from
the Deutsche Reichsbahn, with the
vehicles keeping their original run-
16
ning numbers. The prototype for the
LGB replica is the 99 7234-0, which,
like her sister locomotives, still oper-
ates almost daily on the Brocken
route through the Harz.
